CEO of Chicago Mercantile Exchange to speak at annual FEI-Drake Lecture

Craig S. Donohue, chief executive officer of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, will be the keynote speaker at the annual Financial Executives International-Drake Lecture on Thursday, Oct. 27. The title of his lecture is “The Future is in Futures.”

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will start at 7:15 p.m. in Sheslow Auditorium, Old Main, 26th Street and University Avenue.

The Chicage Mercantile Exchange (CME) is the largest futures exchange in the United States for the trading of futures contracts and options on futures contracts as measured by 2004 trading volume. On Dec. 9, 2004, the CME set a record for the number of outstanding contracts of any exchange in the world with 28.5 million contracts outstanding on that day. In November 2000 the CME became the first publicly traded financial exchange in the United States.

Donohue played a leading role in CME’s demutualization and initial public offering, which made CME the first publicly traded financial exchange in the United States. In addition, he has contributed significantly to setting the organization’s vision and developing growth strategies to expand CME’s core business and global distribution. He was CME’s lead negotiator for technology and product alliances with the world’s leading exchanges and financial organizations, including the New York Mercantile Exchange, Euronext N.A., the Singapore Derivatives Exchange Ltd. (SGX), Standard & Poor’s Corporation and The Nasdaq Stock Market, Inc. He also was instrumental in creating CME’s historic clearing agreement with the Chicago Board of Trade® (CBOT®), and in developing OneChicago LLC, CME’s single stock futures joint venture with CBOT and the Chicago Board Options Exchange® (CBOE®).

Before joining CME, Donohue was associated with the Chicago law firm of McBride, Baker & Coles. He began working for CME as an attorney in 1989. Donohue was named CME’s Vice President and Associate General Counsel in 1995, Vice President of Market Regulation in 1997, and Senior Vice President and General Counsel in 1998. He was appointed to CME’s Management Team as Managing Director, Business Development and Corporate/Legal Affairs in March 2000. Donohue was named Managing Director and Chief Administrative Officer of CME in April 2001 and assumed the same role with the holding company upon its formation in August 2001. He served as Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, Office of the CEO, from October 2002 to December 2003.

In addition to serving on CME’s Board of Directors, Donohue is on the Board of Directors of the National Council on Economic Education (NCEE), a nonprofit organization that focuses on improving the economic literacy of students and teachers. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s Global Markets Advisory Committee. He holds a Master of Management degree from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management (1995), a law degree from John Marshall Law School (1987), a Master of Laws degree in Financial Services Regulation from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law (1989), and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and history from Drake University (1983). Irish America Magazine recognized him as one of the top 100 Irish Business Leaders in 2003 and 2004.
