VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO WELCOME NEW INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

The Drake International Center is seeking faculty and staff to pick up new international students at the Des Moines airport and bring them to their temporary accommodations (usually the Holiday Inn Express). The students will be arriving the week beginning Monday, Jan. 7.

Faculty and staff who are interested in greeting new international students should contact Jami Didion at x3066 or jami.didion@drake.edu.

DRAKE TO HOST NUMEROUS KING HOLIDAY EVENTS

Drake University will host a series of events commemorating the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. as part of the University's celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 15.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Fund Reception will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, on the upper level of Olmsted Center. The scholarship fund provides financial assistance to minority youth from Iowa who are attending Iowa institutions of higher learning.

Also on Saturday, Jan. 13, Drake will host the 16th Annual King Holiday Interracial Banquet. The Rev. Gregory V. Palmer, bishop of the Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church, will be the keynote speaker.

The banquet will start with a social hour at 5 p.m. followed by a buffet dinner at 6 p.m. in Parents Hall at Olmsted Center. The event is sponsored by the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Planning Committee and co-sponsored by the office of Drake President David Maxwell. The cost is $25 per person. For reservations, call 274-5571 or send an e-mail message to Rudy Simms at rsimms@nccj.org no later than Wednesday, Jan. 10.

On Monday, Jan. 15, Drake will co-sponsor the Martin Luther King Jr. Youth and Educators Forum, which will focus on "New Faces From Many Places." The keynote speaker will be Richard P. Murphy, interim director of the Iowa Council for International Understanding.

The forum will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Meredith Hall. There is a $5 registration fee for the forum, which includes lunch. For registration, call 274-5571 by Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Drake also will co-sponsor a Community Forum on Civil Rights and World Peace at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, in Bulldog Theater in Olmsted Center.

The forum, which is titled "Keeping the Dream Alive: The New Face of Iowa," will include a dramatic presentation titled "The New American." There also will be a panel of immigrants and refugees who will relate their personal stories. This event is free and open to the public.

DRAKE'S BENNETT EARNS MVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

Drake sophomore center Carla Bennett has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week for women's basketball.

Bennett ran her streak of double-doubles to four games as she notched one each in wins against Wichita State and No. 15 Southwest Missouri State last week. She had 17 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high five blocks against the Shockers in a 66-48 win last Saturday, then followed that with 22 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks in a 66-63 upset of the Lady Bears Monday.

Bennett leads Drake and ranks third in the MVC in scoring averaging 15.3 points, and is tied for the team lead and for fifth in the league averaging 7.5 rebounds. She also ranks second in the conference in blocks (1.5) and eighth in field goal percentage (.496). A resident of Omaha, Neb., Bennett is an open major in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Drake, which has won three straight games, stands 7-3 and 2-0 in the MVC entering a Sunday home contest against Creighton.
