Jon Torgerson, professor
of philosophy, was quoted in Jan. 2 article written and distributed by The Associated
Press titled "Many U.S. College Students Head to Cuba." He has taken
groups from Des Moines to Cuba every year since 1996 and will be conducting his
fifth Cuba travel seminar for Drake University in May. The article states that
"If relations between the United States and Cuba are normalized, Torgerson
believes college students deserve part of the credit. 'We have forged the way
in terms of making contacts,' he said." The story was picked up by newspapers
such as The Indianapolis Star as well as several online news Web sites
such as ABC News, CNN and Yahoo.
Robert Hariman, the Ellis
and Nelle Levitt professor of rhetoric and communication studies and associate
provost for interdisciplinary programs, was among 34 educators honored at the
National Communication Association's annual meeting in New Orleans in late November.
He received the Golden Anniversary Monograph award for an article he co-wrote
titled "Dissent and Emotional Management in a Liberal-Democratic Society:
The Kent State Iconic Photograph."
Linda Krypel, associate
professor of pharmacy, participated in the 2002 Nonprescription Medicines Academy
last fall in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was the fifth annual meeting of the academy,
which began as an educational conference planned exclusively for faculty who provide
instruction on nonprescription medicines and medical devices. Only one faculty
member from each school or college of pharmacy may be selected to participate.
Michael Rieck, assistant
professor of computer science, presented a paper, co-written with Sukesh Pai of
Microsoft and Subhankar Dahr of San Jose State University, at the sixth Conference
on High Performance Computing in the Asia Pacific Region held in December in Bangalore,
India. The paper is titled "Distributed Routing Algorithms for Wireless Ad
Hoc Networks Using D-hop Connected Sets."
Desmond Bragg, professor
emeritus of education, and Paul Joslin, professor emeritus of science education,
have updated and modified their book titled Science Meets the UFO Enigma,
which was first published in 2000 and re-released last fall by Kroshka Books.
They hope the book will encourage a serious and more comprehensive scientific
study of UFOs.
Brad Tice, assistant professor
of pharmacy practice, has been elected to be chair-elect of the APHA-APPM Clinical/Pharmacotherapeutic
Section of the American Pharmaceutical Association. He will serve one year as
chair-elect and a second year as chair. Tice currently is completing a two-year
term as a member-at-large.
