DRAKE SPEAKER TO DISCUSS ANTI-RACIST ACTIVISM
Jennifer R. Holladay of the Southern Poverty Law Center will give a speech titled "The Role of Anti-Racism on a Predominately White Campus" at Drake University on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

The speech, which is free and open to the public as part of Drake's King Holiday observance, will start at 4 p.m. in the Honors Lounge in Medbury Hall, 1317 28th St. The event is co-sponsored by Drake and the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ).

Holladay is acting director of Tolerance.org, a Web-based project of the Southern Poverty Law Center that encourages people from all walks of life to fight hate and promote tolerance.In her speech, Holladay will discuss the implications of anti-racist activism on campuses and in communities. She also will offer insight on the ways in which white people can work for racial justice, strategies on working with white people on issues of race and skin privilege and an overview of what being an "ally" to people of color can entail.

Holladay lectures nationally on issues of difference and writes for a wide range of publications. Her writings have appeared in The Diversity Factor, OutSmart, the Houston Voice and Teaching Tolerance. The Center for the Study of White American Culture recently published Holladay's "White Anti-racist Activism: A Personal Roadmap" as the fourth volume in its series titled "The Whiteness Papers."
