Attributes" that was published in the latest issue of Management Science.
Ronald J. Torry, associate
professor of pharmacology, has received a two-year grant of $115,500 from the
American Heart Association Heartland Affiliate. The grant will investigate the
expression and potential role of an endogenous growth factor, placenta growth
factor, in the stimulation of blood vessel growth and protection of cardiomyocytes
from apoptosis during myocardial hypoxia/ischemia.
Drake students Lisa Stahlheim, Carrie Mittelstedter and Robert Berendt
are assisting with the research in Torry's laboratory. Collaborating on the project
are Robert Tomanek and Wei Zheng, Anatomy and Cell Biology, University of Iowa,
and D.S. Torry of the School of Medicine, Southern Illinois University.
Ramesh C. Dhussa, assistant
professor of geography, was invited to participate as a panelist in a panel discussion
titled "Reflecting on Field Work in Geography" at the West Lakes Association
of American Geographers annual meeting held in Minneapolis in October.
Robert Hariman, the Ellis and Nelle Levitt profesor of rhetoric and communication
studies and associate provost for interdisciplinary programs, has been appointed
to the Board of Directors of Humanities Iowa, formerly known as the Iowa Humanities

Ismael Hossein-zadeh, professor
of economics, had his article titled "Behind the U.S. Rush to War" published
in the January/February 2003 issue of Against the Current. The article

Jack Gerlovich, professor
of education, spent five days during the winter break traveling to sites throughout
North Carolina where he conducted safety training programs for 500 secondary science
teachers. The training was preceded by research, conducted by Gerlovich and Rahul
Parsa, professor of statistics, into the status of safety (facilities, equipment,
and techniques) as well as teacher understanding of their legal and professional
obligations. Results were compiled and published in the state science teachers'
journal last year. This was followed by Gerlovich meeting with state agencies
and professional science educators to develop a science safety CD-ROM customized
to the applicable laws, and codes of North Carolina and the science teaching profession
and targeted at the safety needs identified through the research.
