1959 alumni to discuss diversity at institute
"National Brotherhood Week 1959 Revisited" is the luncheon topic to be discussed by Drake alumni Robert Tealer, AS 59, and Robert Wolf, AS 59, during the Donald V. Adams Leadership Institute on Saturday, Jan. 26.
Tealer and Wolf will share their experiences as guest editors of articles written for The Times-Delphic in 1959 in observance of National Brotherhood Week. As part of the observance, The Times-Delphic invited the two students --- one African American and one Jewish --- to write guest articles reflecting on their experiences as students in the minority at Drake. Now 43 years later, the two will discuss their experiences at Drake and how their lives unfolded following 1959.
During lunch, Tealer will reflect on some of the experiences and challenges he faced as the only African-American male majoring in education when he enrolled at Drake in 1957 and the only minority member of the men's basketball team. Wolf will contrast the nature of anti-Semitism in 1959 and now, and share how being Jewish shaped his life.
Other topics for
the day-long institute include Team Building, Leadership Styles: Leading Across
Differences, Applying and Preparing for Grad/Law/Med School, Leadership: It's
Human Dynamics, Reflections on Leadership Up Close, Running Effective, Efficient
Organizations, International Work Experiences, A Leader Driven by Purpose, Event
Planning, Working in the Community, Marketing Yourself, Getting Connected After
Graduation and the Soul of Leadership.

At far right: Jane Lynch, program administration assistant in the admission office, helps distribute fleece blankets to students at Capitol View Elementary School on the east side of Des Moines. As a holiday service project, staff members in the admission and student financial planning offices donated money to help purchase a book and warm blanket for each Capitol View student. Drake received colorful notes of appreciation from dozens of children. "Thank you for our books and our blankets," Jeff wrote. "They are nice, beautiful and comfy. I am excited to read my book and use my blanket. I love them a lot." |
