Four new members join Board of Trustees

Four new members have been elected to the Drake University Board of Trustees. They are:


James Bruner
All four new members will serve three-year terms on the Board of Trustees, which meets four times yearly and serves as the University's policy-making and governing body.

Bruner served on Drake's advisory board for 17 years before joining the University's governing board. He received Drake's Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1986 and is a member of the Drake Heritage Society. He has been named Scottsdale Citizen of the Year and received the Scottsdale "Charro of the Year" Award.

Chapman has served as an officer of the Drake National Alumni Association. He joined ITA Group in 1974 and was elected president in 1990. He has transformed ITA Group from a commercial travel agency to a performance marketing company. He received the Iowa/Nebraska Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2000. He also served for six years as a commissioner for the Iowa Development Commission, the youngest person ever appointed to this position by Iowa's governor.

Jacobs worked for the American Lung Association of Iowa and the Iowa Bankers Association before joining The Principal Financial Group in 1989. She was first elected to the Iowa House in 1994 and was elected majority whip in 1999. She is a member of Drake's Heritage Society and a life member of the Francis Marion Drake Society.

Roark has served on Drake's advisory board for 13 years and chaired the board from 1998 through 2000. He belongs to the Drake Heritage Society and
received Drake's Alumni Loyalty Award in 1997. He heads Crown NorthCorp, a publicly traded financial services company.


Writing expert to speak Thursday

Marilyn S. Sternglass, an award-winning author and expert on writing instruction, will speak at Drake University Tuesday, March 6, on "How Writing Based on Reading Stimulates Learning." The speech will start at 4:30 p.m. Medbury Honors Lounge.

Sternglass is professor emerita of English at the City College of the City University of New York. Her books include Time to Know Them: A Longitudinal Study of Writing and Learning at the College Level and Reading, Writing and Reasoning.

James Geneske plays MacHeath (Mack the Knife) and Anne Thornton plays Polly in Drake's production of "The Threepenny Opera," which opens Thursday, March 8, and runs through Sunday, March 11. It is not an opera, but a cynical, sometimes dark and frequently very funny musical. Director Elliot will discuss the production at a TalkAbout supper starting at 6 p.m. Friday, March 9, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Student Center. Dyslexic author to speak Tuesday

Jonathan Mooney, co-author of Learning Outside the Lines, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, in room 124 of the School of Education.

Mooney is a recent Brown University honors graduate who will share his experiences as a dyslexic who learned to read when he was in sixth grade. His book, written with co-author David Cole, suggests tools for success for students with learning disabilities. Mooney's speech is free and open to the public.

Mock trial teams sweep regional competition

Drake's two mock trial teams placed first and second in the Regional Mock Trial Tournament held Feb. 23-24 at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. Both teams will advance to the National Mock Trial Tournament in Des Moines March 30 through April 1.

Teams from 16 colleges and universities participated in the regional contest for undergraduate students. In mock trials, teams present both sides of a hypothetical case, once as the prosecutor and once as the defense. This year's case was a civil suit against a guide company that provided services to a mountain climber who died scaling Mt. Everest.

Three students on Drake's first-place team received Outstanding Attorney awards: Matthew Eslick, a senior from Dayton, Iowa; Shanaz Mohamed, a junior from Des Moines; and Emily Peebler, a freshman from Robins, Iowa. Mohamed also received an Outstanding Witness award as did teammate Zachary Nunn, a senior from Des Moines. Also competing on the first-place team were Craig Edwards, a junior from Clive; Kendra Laffe, a junior from Charles City, Iowa; Josh Murad, a junior from Urbandale; and Dan Reitinger, a freshman from Bettendorf, Iowa.

Three members of the second-place team also received Outstanding Attorney awards: Marisa Ellsworth, a junior from Sheldon, Iowa; Scott Horrigan, a senior from West Des Moines; and Jesse Johnston, a sophomore from Long Grove, Iowa. Also on the team were Warren Baltz, a junior from Galena, Ill.; Allyson Evans, a senior from Huntingtown, Md.; Meka Hayes, a freshman from Terre Haute, Ind.; Becky See, a junior from Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; and Joel Towner, a freshman from Appleton, Wis.

Drake's winning teams were coached by William Schultz, a second-year Drake law student from Fergus Falls, Minn.; and Dave Nelmark, AS'99, JO'99, president of Dream Trials of Johnston.

Longtime professor dies

Gerald W. Schultz, professor emeritus of geography and geology, died of cancer on Feb. 15 in Olympia, Wash.

Professor Schultz received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Iowa and earned his doctorate from Clark University.

He joined Drake's faculty in 1964 as an assistant professor and in 1969 was promoted to associate professor. Schultz retired from Drake in 1991 and moved to Lacey, Wash., five years ago.

"Gerry was extremely well liked by the better students," said Wallace Akin, professor emeritus of geography and geology. "He held high standards but was respected for them."

Schultz was an Army veteran and a member of the American Association of Geographers, American Geographical Society and many other groups. He is survived by a son, Jeffrey of Olympia, and three grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Memorial concert set for March 11

Drake faculty, students, friends and family will celebrate the life of the late Patricia Shinehouse, professor of flute, in a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 11, on the Jordan Stage in Sheslow Auditorium in Old Main. Professor Shinehouse died last July following a two-month battle with cancer.

Featured on the program, in addition to individual music department faculty members, will be the Drake Chamber Choir, Drake Flute Choir and a new composition by Music Department Chair William Dougherty for voice and flute based upon Shinehouse's poetry. The program will reflect Shinehouse's advocacy of women composers and her passion for world music.

Nearly 500 educators attended the Iowa Reading Recovery Conference at the Polk County Convention Complex last Friday and Saturday. The conference was sponsored by Drake's School of Education. the University of Iowa and the Iowa Reading Recovery Center.

Drake faculty, students, friends and family will celebrate the life of the late Patricia Shinehouse, professor of flute, in a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 11, on the Jordan Stage in Sheslow Auditorium in Old Main. Professor Shinehouse died last July following a two-month battle with cancer.
