Jill Caton Johnson, assistant professor of education, recently gave a presentation titled "Using Nonfiction Reading Materials in Content Area Classrooms" at the Illinois Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development Middle Level Conference. She also conducted a workshop for Chicago Public Schools on reading comprehension and expository text. In addition, she published an article with Fred Dufflemeyer of Iowa State University in the fall 2003 edition of In Balanced Reading Instruction. The article was titled "Between the Lions Website: A Resource for Teachers of Young Children."
Klaus Bartschat, the Ellis and Nelle Levitt professor of physics, recently published a paper titled "Ionization-Excitation of Helium to the He+(2p) Magnetic Sublevels Following Electron, Proton, and Molecular Hydrogen (H2+ and H3+) Impact" in Journal of Physics B.
Graham Foust, assistant professor of English, received praise for his first book, As in Every Deafness, from reviewer Maureen N. McLane in the Jan. 4 Books section of The Chicago Tribune. She described the book as "a scarifying triumph of minimalism" and "a peculiar, compelling poetry of annihilation, haunted bulletins from the abyss." In the Feb. 9 issue of Bookslut, critic Dale Smith described the book as "a pleasure to read and dwell in."
"Duo" for euphonium and marimba by William P. Dougherty, the Ellis and Nelle Levitt professor of music and associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, has recently been released on a CD (currently available only in Europe) titled "Excercises de Style." The composition was recorded by Italian artists Corrado Colliard, euphonium, and Mauro Gino, marimba.
Lisa Martin-Hansen, assistant professor of education, has been appointed by the National Science Teachers Association Board of Directors to serve on an NSTA Advisory Board. She will serve a three-year term on the Science Scope Advisory Board, which oversees a journal for middle-level science teachers. This work is a crucial ingredient to the success of NSTA's mission to promote excellence and innovation in science teaching and learning for all.
Eric Johnson, assistant professor of education, recently presented "The Connection Between Assessing Professional Development Schools and the Problems Associated with Professional Development Schools" at the 2004 Professional Development Schools National Conference in Orlando, Fla.
Merrill C. Anderson, an adjunct clinical faculty member in the School of Education's Adult Learning, Performance and Development program, was recently named the 2003 ASTD ROI (Return on Investment) Practitioner of the Year. His latest text, Bottom-Line Organizational Development, was published in 2003.
