DRAKE, LOCAL BUSINESSES SPONSOR NEW SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Drake University President David Maxwell today announced that Drake is joining local businesses in an innovative partnership that will help central Iowa companies recruit and retain more highly educated employees. The partnership will address critical work-force needs by providing incentives for new professionals to launch their careers in the Des Moines area.

Dr. Maxwell made the announcement at an "insider briefing" this morning sponsored by the Greater Des Moines Partnership. Mike Blouin, chief executive officer of the Greater Des Moines Partnership, joined Lt. Gov. Sally Pederson in praising the new initiative for economic development.

Four major businesses already have agreed to participate in the Drake University/Des Moines Corporate Partners Scholarships, and University officials hope more companies will join the program in the coming weeks, President Maxwell said. The initial participants are the Des Moines Register; Norwest Bank of Iowa, Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc.; and the Principal Financial Group.

"The partnership between Drake and these four corporations is a model initiative that we would like to see replicated around the state," Lt. Gov. Pederson said. "This is exactly the kind of creative collaboration that will help Iowa enhance a professional work force that is well-educated, well-trained and committed to making Iowa the best state in which to live, work and raise a family."

Each of the participating businesses will establish one or more funded Corporate Partners Scholarships at Drake. Each scholarship provides full tuition and room and board for a selected student for his or her junior and senior years at Drake. The value of the scholarship would be $22,210 for the 2000-01 academic year.

In most cases, the business also will provide internship and summer employment opportunities. In return, the scholarship recipient has an obligation to accept appropriate employment from the business for a three-year period following graduation. The scholarship may revert to a loan with a repayment obligation to the business if the student does not complete the expected three-year employment commitment with that business.

Drake sophomores have until May 1 to apply for these new scholarships, which will be awarded beginning the 2000 fall semester. Each corporate partner will, in consultation with Drake, identify selection criteria to be used in the screening of potential recipients. Such criteria might include major area of study, grade-point average and leadership activities. The corporate partner will select the scholarship recipient from those nominated by the University.

ACADEMIC FREEDOM AT RISK?

Neal Devins, the Ernest W. Goodrich professor of law at William and Mary Law School in Virginia, will talk about how the trappings of politics threaten academic freedom when he visits Drake Law School on Monday, April 3.

The speech, titled "Will Politically Motivated Professors Destroy Academic Freedom and Tenure: Lessons from the Clinton Impeachment," will begin at 11 a.m. in room 213 of Cartwright Hall. It is free and open to the public.

Devins is concerned about the increasing willingness of legal academics and historians to sign onto letters to Congress and to briefs on subjects they know very little about. He said politically motivated professors who sign such missives are trading off on their reputation as true experts and truth seekers to advance their personal political agendas.

"In so doing, academics fail to live by the academic ethic and, as such, abuse academic freedom," said Devins. "Over time, the consequence of such politicized behavior is that university trustees may come to see academics as undeserving of tenure and the special speech protections that come with academic freedom."

Devins has written several books, including Redefining Equality and Shaping Constitutional Values: The Supreme Court, Elected Government and the Abortion Dispute and Redefining Equality. He also has written more than 50 articles on constitutional law, civil rights and administrative law, and has testified before both the U.S. House and Senate on separation of powers issues.

Devins' visit to Drake is sponsored by the Constitutional Law Center. For more information, call Thomas Baker, the center's director, at x3354.

HERBAL MEDICINE EXPERT TO SPEAK AT DRAKE MONDAY, APRIL 10

Varro E. Tyler, a nationally renowned expert on herbal medicine, will give a lecture at Drake University on Monday, April 10. The lecture, titled "What You Should Know about Herbal Medicine," will start at 7:30 p.m. in Parents Hall at Olmsted Center, 29th Street and University Avenue. The event is free and open to the public.

Tyler will discuss unsafe and ineffective herbal medicines as well as popular herbal products whose safety and efficacy have been demonstrated by scientific and clinical studies. He also will cover various laws and regulations dealing with herbal products, such as the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, which permits botanicals to be sold as dietary supplements (foods) but not as drugs. In addition, he will discuss the development of standards for purity, safety and efficacy of herbal products.

Tyler, a trustee of the American Botanical Council, has written more than 30 books, including Tyler's Honest Herbal and Tyler's Herbs of Choice: The Therapeutic Use of Phytomedicinals. He also has written numerous articles about herbal products for publications such as HerbalGram, Economic Botany and the Journal of Natural Products.

He holds a B.S. in pharmacy from the University of Nebraska and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. He has had a long and distinguished teaching career that included serving as dean of the School of Pharmacy at Purdue University.

NATIONAL ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP DAYS A SUCCESS
On Saturday, Feb. 19, and Saturday, Feb. 26, the Office of Alumni and Parent Programs and the Office of Admission teamed up to co-sponsor the Drake University National Alumni Scholarship Days. This year, more than 260 high school seniors from around the world participated in one of the two required Scholarship Days.

These top-notch students were required to complete an application, be interviewed by a faculty member and a Drake alum, and write an essay. During the scholar day, these students also had the opportunity to meet with professors and current students and attend "mock" classes.

This year, these prospective students and their families were invited to President and Mrs. Maxwell's home on the Friday evening before their scheduled Scholarship Day. The theme of the evening was "School Spirit Night" so students were encouraged to wear their school colors. The evening was casual and encouraged students to relax and talk with the Maxwells as well as the other current students and staff who were in attendance. Approximately 140 students and families attended during both weekends.

The National Alumni Scholarship program's success is due to the campuswide enthusiastic involvement of faculty, staff and students. A program of this magnitude could not be successful without the dedication of numerous individuals. Faculty and staff assisted in a variety of ways throughout the NAS program.
