Madelyn M. Levitt, special assistant to the president for development, has been elected unanimously as the board chair of the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation. The foundation is a $65 million charitable public foundation established to improve the quality of life in Greater Des Moines.
Rachel Caufield, assistant professor of politics and international relations, participated in a seminar titled "Judicial Independence and Accountability" sponsored by the Judicial Excellence Foundation and Tulane Law School March 8-9 in New Orleans. She moderated a panel discussion on judicial nominating commissions. Caufield was invited to participate in the seminar because she serves as research and program consultant for the American Judicature Society's Hunter Center for Judicial Selection. Antonin Scalia, associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, gave the seminar's keynote
address.
Ronald Torry, associate professor of pharmacology, and colleagues have recently published a review article titled "Determinants of Placental Vascularity" in the April edition of the American Journal of Reproductive Immunology. Co-authors included Donald Torry, associate professor of medical microbiology/immunology, and Monica Hinrichs, both at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield.
Herb Strentz, professor of journalism and mass communication, wrote a paper titled "One Account of Post-9/11 Academe: The Subpoena Served on Drake University" that was presented at a March forum titled "The USA Patriot Act and its Implications for Public Universities" at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
Jan McMahill, associate dean of the School of Education, was selected by the Board of Directors of the United State Distance Learning Association to be one of six educators to finalize a set of requirements for the accreditation of Distance Learning Programs. She has been active in distance learning since 1992. She is the founder of the Iowa Distance Learning Association and former president and board chair of USDLA. McMahill is currently in her fourth term on the USDLA Board of Directors.
Bob Cooper, the Employers Mutual distinguished professor of insurance; Garry Frank, professor of public administration; Mary Hansen, director, Iowa Department of Public Health; and Carol Ann Gouty, vice president patient care services, Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare, are co-authors of a paper titled "Key Ethical Issues Encountered in Healthcare Organizations: The Perceptions of Staff Nurses and Nurse Leaders" published in the March 2004 issue of the Journal of Nursing Administration.
