Melissa Weresh,
assistant professor of legal writing, will have an article published in the Western
New England Law Review. The article is titled "Brownfields Redevelopment
and Superfund Reform Under the Bush Administration: A Refreshing Bipartisan Accomplishment."
Weresh also received a grant from the Association of Legal Writing Directors to
publish a supplementary textbook on ethical considerations associated with legal
writing. In March, she made a presentation at the Rocky Mountain Legal Writing
Conference in Albuquerque, N.M., regarding rule development.
Anne Murr,
coordinator of the Adult Literacy Center, presented a conference session, "Learning
Disabilities and Adults with Low Reading Skills: What's the Connection?"
on March 18 at the National Association for Adults with Special Learning Needs
conference in Columbus, Ohio.
Laurie Doré,
professor of law, presented "Secrecy in the Courts" to the U.S. District
Court at the Hawaii District Conference on April 11.
Russell Lovell, professor of law and interim director of the Constitutional Law
Center, was honored with the NAACP Regional IV Trailblazer Award on March 8 at
the NAACP Region IV Civil Rights Advocacy & Training Institute in Topeka,
Kan. Region IV comprises 10 states: Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, Nebraska,
South Dakota, North Dakota, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.
Alexander Kleiner,
the Thomas F. Sheehan professor of mathematics and computer science, received
the Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics at the
Iowa Section of the Mathematical Association of America meeting on April 4-5 at
the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. At that meeting Bernadette
Baker, associate professor of mathematics and computer science, presented
a paper titled "Thematization Of The Calculus Graphing Schema" (coauthored
with Laurel Cooley, York College-CUNY, and Maria Trigueros, ITAM). In addition,
Lawrence Naylor, associate professor of mathematics and computer science,
brought three students (Geoff Tims, Greg VerSteeg and Drew Fustin) to participate
in the Iowa Undergraduate Mathematics Competition.
Lee Jolliffe,
associate professor of journalism and mass communication, recently was quoted
in a story titled "Consumers' Safety on the Home Front" at the Newsday.com
Web site. The article noted how Consumer Reports magazine is "sizing
up risks in a more dangerous world." In the story, Jolliffe was quoted as
saying she found the magazine's coverage of potassium iodide pills to be "particularly
odd."
Daniel Power,
professor of law and director of the Center for Public Service Attorneys, was
featured in the cover story in the March issue of Generations, Iowa's premier
baby boomer magazine. The article said, "Professor Daniel L. Power's passion
is to make a difference and to see other people achieve the fullness of their
talents. From educating future attorneys to his talks to seniors statewide, his
message is clear - do the best you can."
