Jon Torgerson, professor of philosophy, has been elected president of the Drake Chapter of the American Association of University Professors for the 2000-01 year, starting June 1. Mike Myszewski, professor of biology and director of the Honors Program, has been elected vice president of the chapter. Sandra Sellers, associate professor of nursing, has been elected secretary/treasurer of the chapter.

Thomas E. Baker, professor of law and director of the Constitutional Law Center, was quoted in an April 27 article in USA Today about a Supreme Court case in which the Boy Scouts of America have invoked the First Amendment to stop homosexuals from being troop leaders.

R. Dean Wright,
professor of sociology, was quoted April 24 in a front-page article in The Wall Street Journal on businesses hiring ex-convicts because of the labor shortage.

Neil D. Hamilton,
Ellis and Nelle Levitt distinguished professor of law and director of the Agricultural Law Center, spoke at the USDA's annual Agricultural Outlook Conference in February. He addressed legal issues facing farmers who enter into production and marketing contracts. He also took part in an in-service training workshop for agricultural extension agents on Feb. 10 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Hamilton was one of five Americans invited to speak at a week-long workshop in March in Bellagio, Italy, on the future of intellectual property rights and international agriculture.

The following faculty and staff members recently were honored for 25 years of service to Drake:
  • Bonnie R. Cox, budget and accounts payable clerk, Cowles Library.
  • Faye L. Rees, general clerk A, Advancement Records.
  • Allen M. Scult, professor of rhetoric and communication studies.
  • Herbert J. Strentz, professor of journalism and director of graduate studies, School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
  • Thomas M. Tronick, director of residence life.
  • David S. Walker, professor of law.
  • Susan E. Wright, professor of sociology, who has been named interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, effective July 1.
