The summer series
of programs at the Drake Municipal Observatory will begin tonight (Friday, June
6) with a presentation titled "The Science of Star Trek/Star Wars."
The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will start at 8:30 p.m.
at the observatory in Waveland Park.
Charles Nelson, assistant professor of astronomy, said tonight's program will
explore issues such as whether it is possible to travel faster than the speed
of light and whether it will one day be possible for humans to be teleported from
one place to another.
Part Two of "The Science of Star Trek/Star Wars" will be presented at
8:30 p.m. Friday, June 13. The summer series will continue with presentations
on the myths and legends of science fiction. All presentations start at 8:30 p.m.
The schedule is listed below:
Graveside services
will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at Glendale Cemetery for Stuart C. Tiedeman,
professor emeritus of education. Professor Tiedeman, 90, died May 30 of complications
from a long battle with heart disease.
A native of Wisconsin, Dr. Tiedeman joined the Drake faculty in 1946 and enjoyed
a 32-year-career at the University that was marked by a genuine commitment to
the success of his students. He served Drake in a number of positions, including
dean of students, chair of the Guidance and Counseling Department, president of
the Missouri Valley Conference and chair of the Drake Athletic Council.
"Stuart was a wonderful human being," said Don Adams, executive assistant
to President Maxwell for community and alumni affairs. "He was deeply respected
in the School of Education and has met for years with the retired faculty group
that meets monthly."
Professor Tiedeman is survived by his wife, Regina; a daughter, Terri Kline, ED'71,
of Des Moines; a son, Dr. James S. Tiedeman, LA'66, of Charlottesville, Va.; and
three grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Drake or St. John's
Lutheran Church.
Faculty and staff
are invited to join alumni and friends in representing Drake University at the
Des Moines Arts Festival on June 27, 28 and 29. The volunteers will sell Pepsi
beverages and bottled water.
"By volunteering, you will help create community awareness of Drake's programs
and events," said Melissa Sturm-Smith, assistant director of alumni and parent
programs. "You also will receive a free Des Moines Arts Festival T-shirt
and Drake water bottle. Plus, you will raise money for the Central Iowa Alumni
Chapter Computer Scholarship and meet Drake alumni and friends."
A variety of shifts are available, but volunteers especially are needed for Saturday,
June 28, from 4 to 8 p.m. and from 7 to 11 p.m.
To volunteer, send a message ASAP to melissa.sturm-smith@drake.edu.
