VOLUNTEERS
NEEDED FOR ARTS FESTIVAL
Faculty and staff are invited to represent Drake at the Des Moines Arts Festival,
June 23, 24 and 25. More than 180 members of the Drake community took part in the
1999 Des Moines Arts Festival.
"This year, we need over 200 volunteers to help sell Pepsi products at the beverage
tents," said Jeff Hatfield, JO '88, GR '92, chair of the Central Iowa Chapter
of the Drake National Alumni Association.
"By volunteering, you help raise awareness that Drake is active and involved
in the Des Moines
Community. You also raise money to help support efforts of the Central Iowa Alumni
Chapter. Plus, you receive a Des Moines Arts Festival T-shirt in appreciation for
your time."
For more information or to sign up to volunteer, call the Office of Alumni and Parent

McDONALD'S TO OPEN JUNE 16
A new McDonald's restaurant in the Drake Neighborhood will open at 6 a.m. Friday,
June 16. The restaurant at the corner of 30th Street and Forest Avenue, replaces
the one at 3116 Forest Ave., which has been a neighborhood mainstay for 36 years.
The new restaurant, owned by Jim and Karen Baker, has a lobby that includes a self-service
drink station and a student/business center with outlets for laptop computers. The
restaurant also features state-of-the-art drive-through equipment, including an "automated
beverage system" that automatically fills drinks for drive-through customers
as the orders are entered into the cash register system and a LCD display screen
to confirm drive-through orders.
"The new system not only improves order accuracy but also speed of drive-through
service," said Jim Baker.
To celebrate the grand opening, the new restaurant will have breakfast and regular
menu specials during the week of June 16-23.
The McDonald's restaurant at 3116 Forest Ave. will close its doors for business at
3 p.m. Sunday, June 11. The restaurant opened March 3, 1964. Former McDonald's chairman
Fred L. Turner grew up in the Drake Neighborhood.
