Don Adams, special counsel in institutional advancement; David Walker, dean of Drake Law School; and Eleanor Zeff, assistant professor of politics and international relations, have been selected to receive major awards in the next few weeks.
Don Adams will receive the Neighborhood Leadership Award at the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 24, at the Des Moines Marriott. Adams will be honored for his leadership of the Drake Neighborhood Improvement Task Force, his service on the Drake Neighborhood Association Board of Directors and his contributions to the city's Neighborhood Based Service Delivery Program. Adams also has served on the Des Moines Consortium Board and the Executive Committee of the Partnership for Community Health and Education.
"Don has a personal commitment not only to Drake University and the surrounding neighborhoods, but also to the entire city of Des Moines," Des Moines Police Chief Bill McCarthy, LA'76, said in a letter of nomination. "He makes assurances to the parents of his students that Des Moines is a safe place to live, then spends time making sure that nothing erodes that security. . . .I can think of no one more deserving of recognition for helping to make the Drake area a pleasant place to live and work."
David Walker will be presented the Iowa State Bar Association's President's Award by President Kevin Collins for the work Walker has contributed for the benefit of the bar association, the legal profession and Iowa citizens.
Walker will be recognized at the bar association's President's Reception and Awards Dinner on Wednesday, June 16, at the State Historical Building. The reception will start at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m.
The outgoing chair of the Iowa State Bar Association's Business Law Section, Walker led successful efforts to pass legislation through the Iowa General Assembly, including the revised Iowa Business Corporation Act. Walker also servers as chair of the Iowa Commission on Uniform State Laws, is active in the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws, and chairs the Committee to Revise the Uniform Limited Liability Company Act.
"Some of the finest up-to-date legislation in the U.S. is due to Dean Walker," said Dwight Dinkla, executive director of the Iowa State Bar Association. "Updating and modernization of business laws now in Iowa makes us more competitive for new industries."
Eleanor Zeff will be honored Monday, June 28, at the Iowa Council for International Understanding Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony at the Hotel Fort Des Moines. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m.
Zeff will receive one the Elinor Robson Award, which is given annually to someone who has contributed to international understanding.
"She's been a member of the Iowa Council for International Understanding Board of Directors for several years and hosted many visitors involved with our organization," said Alex Zama, international programs manager for the council. "She also has been active in the Drake Center for Global Citizenship and conducted research around the world, including Africa and France."
Zeff also directly coordinated the last People to People International, led Drake students on Model
European Union Simulations and currently leads the Model European Union at Drake.
The featured speaker for the evening will be Congressman Jim Leach, who is a senior member of the Committee on International Relations and is serving his 10th consecutive term as a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Drake Law School professor Hunter R. Clark will be featured in a rebroadcast of C-SPAN2's "Booknotes" at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 12 and at 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 13.
The program regarding Clark's book on Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall is being replayed as part of the 50th anniversary of the 1954 landmark Brown v. Board of Education case.
Clark and his co-author, Michael Davis, were guests on "Booknotes" to talk about their book Thurgood Marshall: Warrior at the Bar, Rebel on the Bench. The authors discuss the life and career of the late Supreme Court justice. They were not able to talk to Marshall personally but use interviews from people closely associated with him to describe his upbringing in Baltimore, his work for the NAACP, and his handling of the pivotal Brown v. Board of Education segregation case.
Drake's Department of Music will be hosting "Piano at Drake" July 6-10.
"Piano at Drake" is designed to provide an opportunity for talented pianists grades 8 through 12 to work closely with accomplished artists and teachers who are on the faculty of the Department of Music at Drake University," said Nicholas Roth, assistant professor of piano.
The department is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and is renowned throughout the region for the quality of its professional degree programs in music. Roth will lead the program along with Chiu-Ling Lin, professor of piano and William P. Dougherty, professor of music theory and composition.
The program will include two private lessons, special sessions on jazz and composition, and master classes on solo piano, piano duet and collaborative practices.
The total cost of the workshop is $350 for single occupancy and $330 for double occupancy, which includes all instruction, housing and food, and use of on-campus recreational facilities. For students not staying on campus, the cost is $290, which includes instruction only.
A non-refundable deposit of $125 is due by June 18, payable to Piano at Drake. Students should plan to arrive at the Drake Fine Arts Center by 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6, for registration. The opening faculty recital will be held at 3 p.m. on July 6.

Drake University's Community School of Music will conduct the first annual Flute Choir Camp July 6-10 for students entering grades seven through nine in the 2004-5 academic year.
"The Flute Choir Camp is a wonderful and challenging opportunity for talented and hard working flutists to grow as musicians and enhance their ensemble skills," said Erika Inge Leake, assistant professor of flute at Drake University. "The Flute Choir experience will include the learning of a wide variety of repertoire written specifically for flute choir as well as discussion on topics related to flute playing."
The camp will be held in room 257 of the Harmon Fine Arts Center. Students from outside the Des Moines area will stay in Drake's residence halls. The cost of the camp is $330 for double occupancy or $350 for single occupancy. For students not staying on campus, the cost is $290.
