This past week the military science program at Drake moved from a house at 1161 26th St. to new quarters at 1153 24th St. The new location provides better classrooms and other improved facilities for the program. The phone numbers for the program will not change.
Tom Davis and Amy Stephens, Drake's new head basketball coaches, will be presented with keys to the city of Des Moines at the start of the Des Moines City Council meeting on Monday, June 23. The meeting will start at 4:30 p.m. in City Hall, 400 E. First St.
A preview of "Discovering
Dominga," a PBS documentary, will be shown at Drake University on Tuesday,
June 24. The screening, which is free and open to the public, will start at 7
p.m. in Bulldog Theater in Olmsted Center.
Denese Becker, the subject of the documentary by Patricia Flynn and Mary Jo McConahay,
will attend the screening at Drake, which will be followed by a discussion session.
The documentary focuses on Becker's life as a young Iowa mother who returns to
her native land of Guatemala in pursuit of justice and self-discovery.
The screening is sponsored by Humanities Iowa and co-sponsored by Drake University,
the National Conference for Community and Justice Iowa Region and the Center for
New Community. The documentary resulted from a partnership between Humanities
Iowa and "Point of View," the acclaimed independent nonfiction film
series on PBS.
The national broadcast of "Discovering Dominga" is set for Tuesday,
July 8. Iowa Public Television will broadcast the documentary at 9 p.m.

John Domini, visiting assistant professor of English, will be reading and signing his new novel, Talking Heads: 77, at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at Barnes and Noble, 4550 University Ave., West Des Moines.
On Wednesday, July 9, Drake will host a Jazz in July concert featuring Thelonious Assault, a band directed by Andrew Classen, associate professor of trumpet and director of jazz studies at Drake. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will start at 6 p.m. in the courtyard of the Harmon Fine Arts Center. The band draws its inspiration from jazz legend Thelonious Monk.
Tracey Bearden,
a standout performer on the Drake women's track team, has been named to the 2003
CoSIDA Verizon Academic All-American Women's Cross Country/Track and Field first
team in the university division.
Bearden, a 13-time All-Missouri Valley Conference performer, excelled in the classroom
as well as the track. She earned a master's degree in public administration with
a top grade-point average. This fall, she plans to attend the University of Houston
Law Center, where she hopes to become an attorney specializing in health law.
"Becoming first-team Academic All-American is a true honor," said Bearden,
a native of Brookfield, Wis. "I have been truly blessed to be part of Drake's
cross country and track teams. I have not only become a better athlete and student,
but also a better person."
The elite team was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America
(CoSIDA). Student-athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20
or better.
Bearden was selected as a nominee for the national list after being named to the
2003 CoSIDA Verizon District VII Academic All-American first team.
