David Maxwell, president of Drake University, will serve as the 2004-05 chair of the Presidents' Council of the Missouri Valley Conference, Valley Commissioner Doug Elgin announced recently.
Renae Chesnut, faculty athletics representative at Drake, will serve as the 2004-05 president of the Missouri Valley Conference. Chesnut, PH'85, GR'85, GR'98, associate professor of pharmacy practice, also serves as assistant dean of student affairs in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
Nicholas Roth, assistant professor of piano, was the featured soloist with the Chicago Chamber Orchestra on April 4. He presented a solo recital at the University of Notre Dame on May 9.
Marcia Keyser, assistant professor of library science, presented a paper at the Colleges, Code, and Copyright Conference sponsored by the Center for Intellectual Property at the University of Maryland, University College in Adelphi, Md., on June 10-11. The paper was titled "The Academic Mission and Copyright Law: Are These Values In Conflict?"
Allen Scult, professor of philosophy and rhetoric, has presented a lecture at the Center for Theoretical Studies in Prague, Czech Republic, on his forthcoming book, Being Jewish/Reading Heidegger: An Ontological Encounter. He also taught a four-week course, titled The Re-emergence of Religion in Continental Philosophy, in the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Charles University in Prague. The visit to Prague was funded in part by the Center for Global Citizenship and the Humanities Center at Drake, as well as the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Charles.
Randall Huff, visiting assistant professor of English, is author of an article on the exploration of the Mississippi River that has been published by Routledge in the Literature of Travel and Exploration: an Encyclopedia.
Paul Joslin, professor emeritus of science education, has an article titled "Science Meets the UFO Enigma" published in the spring
issue of The Torch, journal of the
International Association of Torch Clubs Inc.
Angela Battle, assistant professor of art, has a solo exhibition of new beeswax paintings that opened on May 1 at the Hearst Center for the Arts in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The show will run through August.
Birgit Wassmuth, professor of advertising, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Collaboration for the Advancement of College Teaching and Learning. The Collaboration, an alliance of public, private, and tribally affiliated colleges and universities, promotes and supports outstanding college teaching and learning. Her three-year term began June 1.
Janet Hill Keefer, who has been teaching at Zayed University in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, while on leave from her position as professor of journalism and mass communication at Drake, has received an Educator in the Newsroom Fellowship from the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation. The program places university-level broadcast educators in radio and television newsrooms for four weeks during the summer to refresh their skills and master new technologies. Keefer's fellowship is with WMBB-TV in Panama City, Fla.
Sue Lerdal, law library reference librarian, was one of 10 librarians selected to give presentations at the annual spring meeting of the Iowa Library Association/Association of College and Research Librarians held at Central College in Pella. Her presentation was titled "Evidence-Based Librarianship: Fad or Opportunity for Academic Librarians?"
