'Drake Day at the Fair' set for Saturday, Aug. 17

Drake University will present "DU the Fair!" on Saturday, Aug. 17, with a full day of fun-filled events and free giveaways at the Iowa State Fair. This year, Drake University has big plans for new activities and events.

"What we are doing this year at the fair is new for Drake. We are really trying to do more to engage our different constituents," said Erin Downs, director of public relations for Drake. "Our goal is to have community presence at the fair, while also providing an opportunity for Drake alumni, faculty and staff to be involved in celebrating and promoting Drake. 'DU the Fair!' offers this with a full day of Drake-sponsored events."

"DU the Fair!" will feature events throughout the fairgrounds, including three Drake booths, free giveaways (the first 500 fairgoers in Drake-gear will receive a prize), a hoop-shooting contest and an opportunity to collect autographs from Drake athletes and coaches.

Keep your eyes on the sky and look for the Drake mascot, Spike the Bulldog, looming 25-feet in the air. Or, follow the Bulldog footprints to the Drake tent and pose for free souvenir digital photos in front of Old Main, next to Spike, or lined up at the Drake Relays. In addition, Wells Blue Bunny will be serving ice cream during a Drake-sponsored "blues" party.

Root for the Bulldogs as Sodexho, Drake's food service provider, competes in the Iowa State Regional Chili Competition and for Drake coaches as they test their cooking skills during the Celebrity Mystery Sack Competition. Use your eyes and ears at Heritage Village to see chemistry magic put on by the Drake Chemistry Department and listen to storytelling presented by the Drake School of Education. Come hear Neil Hamilton, Drake law professor, present issues relating to the Iowa Food Policy Council, and don't miss live music performances by Drake students. Even if you are not a concert-goer, be sure to join Drake alumni and friends for a pre-concert party at 6 p.m. at Jalapeno Pete's Cantina.

If you're interested in volunteering at the fair on Aug. 17, call Cindy Hough at x2169.

Drake jumps into Jazz in July

Friends of Drake Arts and the Drake Neighborhood Association will sponsor an evening of Jazz in July from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, in the courtyard of the Harmon Fine Arts Center.

The band will be Thelonius Assault, featuring Andrew Classen, associate professor of trumpet and director of jazz studies at Drake, on trumpet; Peter and Lynn Hart on saxophones; Dave Holcomb on piano and Charlie Abplanal on electric bass. The group draws inspiration from jazz legend Thelonius Monk. Admission is free.

Jazz in July is presenting 31 concerts throughout July under the sponsorship of Wells Fargo & Co. and the Metro Arts Alliance.

Calvert named softball coach

Rich Calvert, who has served as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa the last six years, has been named head softball coach at Drake.

While at Iowa, Calvert helped the Hawkeyes to five NCAA Tournament appearances and two Women's College World Series, as well as Big Ten Conference titles in 1997 and 2000. Calvert was 262-104-1 in his six seasons on staff at Iowa.

"Rich is really enthusiastic about the potential of the Drake program," said Drake Athletic Director Dave Blank. "Everyone we talked to has a high regard for Rich. He has previous head coaching experience. Rich was instrumental in Iowa's successful softball program and he is familiar with the Missouri Valley Conference due to his tenure at Illinois State."

"I'm excited about the opportunity that lies ahead and the direction where I see Dave Blank taking Drake athletics," Calvert said. "There are great possibilities here under Dave's leadership.

"I'm very comfortable in going after the best high school athletes in Iowa because we had good success in building the Hawkeye program that way. Then we will branch out attracting other athletes because of Drake's academic reputation."

Calvert, 36, was Iowa's hitting coach, and he helped the Hawkeyes to a Big Ten-best .314 team batting average in the 2000 season.

He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Illinois State University.

Sculptor to give lecture July 18

Andy Goldsworthy, who is internationally known for creating sculptures of extraordinary beauty with natural materials, will give a public lecture at Drake on Thursday, July 18, in conjunction with "Three Cairns," a multi-part project initiated by the Des Moines Art Center.

The project consists of three temporary structures, three permanent sculptures and three museum exhibitions that span the North American continent.

In the lecture, Goldsworthy will discuss his work and the "Three Cairns" project. The lecture is made possible in part by Drake University. Goldsworthy's exhibition at the Des Moines Art Center will open on Saturday, July 20.

Anderson Gallery receives grant

The Anderson Gallery has received a $5,500 grant from the Iowa Arts Council for the exhibition "Lucio Pozzi INDOOR GAMES."

"This is especially good news because the Iowa Arts Council gave very few grants this year due to budget cuts," said Cira Pascual-Marquina, director of the Anderson Gallery.

"Luzzio Pozzi INDOOR GAMES" will open at the Anderson Gallery with a reception on Nov. 15.

Pozzi's work is democratic, collaborative, and experimental in nature. He calls himself "a painter who pursues his painterly concerns in other media as well," and his exhibitions often include video, installation, photowork, and performance. In his installations, which constitute the backbone of his practice and are rooted in his architectural training, Pozzi investigates human responses to altered and untraditional environments and situations. He will continue this line of experimentation with his Anderson Gallery exhibition, collaborating with a group of students to build a site-specific piece that uses four basic colors (red, blue, green, and yellow) and juxtaposes large format photographs of infants with images of war.

Born in 1935 in Milan, Italy, Pozzi studied architecture in Rome, where he practiced for almost a decade. He came to the United States invited by the Harvard International Summer Seminar in 1962. Shortly after, his art began to appear in galleries such as Leo Castelli and John Weber. Pozzi's numerous solo and group exhibitions include one of the first "Projects" solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; installations at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; a large retrospective at the Museum of New Art, Detroit; Documenta 6, Kassel; and the Venice Biennale (U.S. pavilion).

Pozzi's work is represented in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, among other major museums.
