DON'T MISS ALL THAT JAZZ IN THE DRAKE NEIGHBORHOOD

Jazz up your July by attending one or more of the three free concerts in the Drake Neighborhood. All three concerts are free and open to the public as part of the Metro Arts Alliance Jazz in July series.

The Drake Neighborhood Association and Generations Inc. are co-sponsoring the first of the three concerts at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 21, in Drake Park, 23rd Street and Cottage Grove Avenue. Volunteers will serve food and host games for children while great summertime jazz music plays.

The second concert on Monday, July 23, will feature vocalist Tina Haase and her accompanist, David Larson, performing on the grounds of Grace United Methodist Church, 3700 Cottage Grove Ave. The concert will start at 7 p.m.

The third concert on Wednesday, July 25, will showcase the Drake All-Star Big Band, led by Andy Classen, Drake's director of jazz studies, playing a variety of standard jazz repertoire. The concert, which will start at 5:30 p.m. in the courtyard of the Harmon Fine Arts Center, is sponsored by Friends of Drake Arts and the Drake Neighborhood Association.

Concert-goers are invited to stop by the Drake Neighborhood Farmers to pick up snacks or dinners to enjoy during the concert. The market is open from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays in the parking lot of First Christian Church, 25th Street and University Avenue.

WRIGHT APPOINTED ASSOCIATE DEAN OF JOURNALISM SCHOOL

David A. Wright, associate professor of journalism and mass communication, has been appointed associate dean of Drake's School of Journalism and Mass Communication, effective Aug. 13. He will succeed Henry Milam, who is moving to Texas this week and taking a one-year sabbatical before retiring.

Wright joined the Drake faculty in 1988 as a part-time faculty member and taught beginning broadcast methods and basic photojournalism. He was promoted to associate professor in 1990 and teaches classes focusing on television production and Web page design and construction.

Wright received the Burlington Northern Award for Innovation in Undergraduate Teaching in 1995 and was a visiting professor at the Senior College of Ballyfermot in Dublin, Ireland during the 1997-1998 school year.

"David brings great energy and instinct to the job. Students, staff and faculty respect his ability to solve problems intelligently and quickly," said John Lytle, interim dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. "I look forward to working with him in our new roles."

Prior to his academic career, Wright was a producer and director for Drake University's Educational Media and Television Services. He previously served as producer and director for the Iowa Television Network KWWL. He also has production experience with Rogers Cable TV and has done freelance production work for CBS, NBC, ESPN and WTBS.

Wright received his bachelor's degree in television and film from Trinity University and his master's degree in mass communication from Drake.

At Drake, Wright serves as a member of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee and as a member of the Multimedia Task Force.
