Drake President to Leave Saturday for RAGBRAI

Drake President David Maxwell will leave Des Moines at noon Saturday for the Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa, which begins Sunday, July 23, in Council Bluffs.

Dr. Maxwell, 55, completed last year's 530-mile RAGBRAI despite a heat wave that melted asphalt roadways. He's taking up his Le Monde touring bike again for this year's 450-mile ride to continue to raise the visibility of Drake across Iowa. Along the way, he will attend two receptions for Drake alumni and friends.

The Drake Web site will feature
daily dispatches and photos from President Maxwell during RAGBRAI, which ends Saturday, July 29, in Burlington. Dr. Maxwell also will be doing daily interviews with Des Moines radio station KMXD Mix 100.3. In addition, he is scheduled to be featured on the WOI-TV evening newscasts on Saturday, July 22, and on the KCCI-TV morning newscast on Wednesday, July 26.

President Maxwell will be riding with several Drake faculty and staff members as well as alumni who have banded together to form Team Drake. They'll be wearing blue jerseys printed with the "Team Drake 2000" logo, the Drake mascot, Spike, on a bike, and the slogan "No Bark. All Bike."

Third Web Page Design Class Added to Meet Demand

Due to two completely full classes, an additional section of Web Page Design, JMC 199-603, has been scheduled for August 18 and 19. The class can either be taken for one hour credit or for no credit as a workshop.

The class introduces students to the basics of building a Web page, said David Wright, associate professor of journalism and mass communication. Students will work with Claris Home Page 3.0, a cross-platform application, to learn the ins and outs of pages, links, forms and images. This is not a class for "code heads," but instead an intense introduction to the joys of creating Web pages, Wright said.

The class will meet from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, August 18, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, in room 125 of Meredith Hall. Seats are expected to fill quickly. Call Barbara in the SJMC office at x2838 for registration. Questions about the class should be directed to Wright at x4527 or

Lehmkuhle Places 25th in U.S. Olympic Track Trials

Recent Drake graduate Jason Lehmkuhle fell short in his attempt to make the U.S. Olympic track team when he placed 25th in the 10,000-meter run at the U.S. Olympic track trials in Sacramento, Calif., on July 14.

Lehmkuhle, a native of St. Charles, Mo., was clocked in 30 minutes 32.29 seconds. Mebrahtom Keflezighi of Nike won the race in 28:03.32, holding off a late charge by Alan Culpepper of Adidas who finished in 28:03.35.

"I think the length of the season caught up with Jason [Lehmkuhle]," said Drake men's track coach Dan Hostager. "None of the college runners really ran well. They were all peaking for the conference and NCAA national championships and it got to be a long season."

Earlier, Lehmkuhle had placed third in the 10,000 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships May 31 in Durham, N.C., and won the 5,000 at the Missouri Valley Conference outdoor championships in Wichita, Kan., May 20.

"This was a great experience," Lehmkuhle said. "But in my mind my whole season was geared toward the NCAA national championships, so it was hard to hold a peak longer.

"I'm going to continue running at a high level, and I think when I compete in the trials in four years the results will be different. Running in the Olympic Trials was a great way to finish off my college career. I want to thank Drake for helping me develop as a runner during the last five years."

Drake Football Season Tickets Available

Drake football season tickets are now on sale for a six-game home schedule.

Faculty and staff members receive a $5 discount. The cost is $30 for a season ticket for an adult. For more information, call the Drake athletic ticket office at x3791.

The Bulldogs open their 109th year of intercollegiate football playing host to McKendree on Sept. 2. Drake will open the Pioneer Football League season at home Sept. 30 facing the University of San Diego. The Bulldogs also entertain PFL league members Valparaiso Oct. 7 and Butler Oct. 28.

Drake will face NCAA I-AA independent Jacksonsville Nov. 4 and then close out the season playing host to Towson of the Patriot Football League Nov. 18. All home games will start at 1 p.m.

With 15 returning starters, headed by first-team All-American defensive end Mike Foster, the Drake football team hopes to ride the momentum generated last year when a late surge enabled the Bulldogs to enjoy their eighth straight seven-plus victory season. Drake posted a 7-4 record last year, finishing third in the Pioneer Football League. Besides Foster, returning first-team all-league selections are offensive guard Sean Coughlin, fifth-year quarterback Solon Bell, and junior placekicker Billy Cundiff.

Foster, who was the only underclassman named to the American Football Coaches Association NCAA Division I-AA All-American team, will anchor a defense that has six returning starters. He led the PFL with 13 quarterback sacks.

Bell was a first-team all-league choice in 1998 but suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the second game of last year. Cundiff led the PFL with 10 field goals and set a school single-season mark for points by a kicker with 67.
