As of today, Drake
has received 350 reservations for Iowa Private College Week, which begins Monday,
Aug. 5, and continues through Friday, Aug. 9. That's a 26 percent increase over the
278 reservations Drake had at the same time last year.
Last summer, Drake recorded a total of 340 campus visits during Iowa Private College
Week. "With the outpouring of interest and reservations, plus the students who
will walk-in without reservations, we're sure to surpass last year's campus visits,"
said Deneen Dygert, associate director of admission. "We are delighted to see
so many students planning to visit Drake during Iowa Private College Week."
Dygert attributes the increase in reservations to the fact that this is the fourth
annual Iowa Private College Week, which has become a staple in the marketplace, and
to advertising in The Des Moines Register and on WHO Radio sponsored by the Iowa
Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. Another factor, she said, is
that Drake improved its promotion of the week-long event by including it for the
first time in the University's campus visit brochure.
President David Maxwell will speak to students and their parents at eight of the
10 welcome sessions next week. Provost Ron Troyer will welcome visitors at the other
two sessions. Welcome sessions will start each day at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in Levitt
Hall in Old Main.
While visiting Drake, students and parents also will meet with faculty, learn about
the admission process and student financial planning, attend a panel discussion featuring
current students and take a campus tour. Plus, they have the option of eating lunch
at Drake. "It's a very efficient, comprehensive three-hour visit," Dygert
said. "We really appreciate the faculty, staff and students who are playing
an important role in making Iowa Private College Week a success."
Fifty of the 793 entering first-year students enrolling in Drake this fall attended
last year's Iowa Private College Week.
Faculty and staff
are invited to the National Night Out picnic on Tuesday, Aug. 6, sponsored by the
Drake Neighborhood Association, Drake Park Neighbors for Action, Carpenter Neighbors
Association and Kirkwood Glen Association.
The picnic will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Drake Park, 23rd Street and Drake
Park Avenue. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided. Attendees are asked to bring
a dish to pass.
There is a free lunch at Drake -- the All University Appreciation Picnic from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, in the arcade of the Harmon Fine Arts Center. In case of rain or extreme heat, the picnic will be held in the Terrace Court at Olmsted Center. If this occurs, an e-mail announcement will be made that morning announcing the change of location.
Beginning violin instruction
for children ages 3 to 8 will be offered for the first time this fall by the Drake
University Community School of Music.
The program, which begins Aug. 27, offers 16 private lessons, plus 12 group classes
during the fall semester. Students will learn to play children's songs and pieces
in the Suzuki style. They also will learn reading notation, counting rhythms, beginning
theory and group playing.
Private lessons lasting 20 minutes will be held from 2 to 4:40 p.m. on Tuesdays while
the group classes, which last 30 minutes, will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.
Tuition, which covers both private lessons and group classes, is $430 per semester,
including a $10 enrollment fee.
