DRAKE EXPECTS HUNDREDS OF CAMPUS VISITORS NEXT WEEK

Approximately 170 prospective students and their families have made reservations to visit Drake during the second annual Iowa Private College Week: Aug. 7-11.

Last year at this time, Drake had 130 reservations but ended up with 192 campus visits during Iowa Private College Week. "We are optimistic that we'll have lots of walk-ins again this year and that we could end up with a total of 225 to 250 campus visits," said Deneen Dygert, associate director of admission.

Drake is one of 29 Iowa private colleges and universities participating in Iowa Private College Week. For each college they visit, participants will receive a passport stamp worth a waiver of that college's application fee. Students who visit three colleges can have their application fee waived at any of the 29 institutions.

Tours and information sessions will start each weekday at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in Levitt Hall in Old Main. President Maxwell will welcome the visitors at each of the 10 sessions. In addition, there will be meetings with faculty in the various colleges and schools, campus tours led by student volunteers and a panel discussion featuring current students and Parents Board Co-Chairs Jim and Patty Verlengia, also a technical assistant in Drake's School of Education.

Many businesses in the Drake Neighborhood are supporting Iowa Private College Week at Drake. The new Drug Town at the Uptown Shopping Center is giving Drake a hefty discount so that the University can present each visitor with bottled water at the start of campus tours. In addition, the following businesses are offering discounts to Iowa Private College Week participants who present their passports: Campbell's Nutrition Center, the D-Shoppe, Drake Diner, Freidrich's World Coffees, Iowa Bakery Cafe, University Book Store and the Varsity Cafe & Coffee House.

In addition, two bed-and-breakfast inns ó The Cottage and The Carter house ó and the Holiday Inn Express at Drake are offering free tours for Iowa Private College Week participants along with a drawing for a free night's stay.

"The support from Drake-area businesses has been tremendous," Dygert said. "It's great to have so many organizations working together to make Iowa Private College Week a success at Drake."

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR PATRICIA SHINEHOUSE SET FOR AUG. 27

A memorial service for Patricia Gay Shinehouse, assistant professor of flute at Drake, will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, in St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Student Center.

Professor Shinehouse, 43, died of cancer at Mercy Medical Center on July 27. She had joined the Drake faculty in 1996 and was the first-chair flute with Des Moines Metro Opera.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Patricia Shinehouse Memorial Fund at Bankers Trust.

WEDNESDAY IS ICE CREAM DAY AT DRAKE

Drake will have its last Ice Cream Social of the summer from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, in Olmsted Circle. The cost is 50 cents per person.

Later that day, Drake faculty, staff and students are invited to attend a free Ice Cream Party at the Drake Neighborhood Farmers Market from 4 to 7 p.m. in the parking lot of First Christian Church, 25th Street and University Avenue.

Volunteers are needed to scoop ice cream at the market. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Jenny Gieske at 277-6951.

DRAKE TO TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE AT THE IOWA STATE FAIR

President David Maxwell and his wife, Madeleine, will ride in the Iowa State Fair Parade again this year. The parade will start at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, at the State Capitol and proceed down Grand Avenue to 10th Street. The event will be televised, in part, by KDSM Fox 17 at 9 p.m. that day.

Drake and AT&T are co-sponsoring the Fun Forest Stage at the Iowa State Fair, which runs from Aug. 10-20. The Fun Forest Stage, located just east of the Agriculture Building, will feature family entertainment from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. For several days of the fair, Drake faculty and staff volunteers will have an exhibit near the stage where they will distribute Drake literature along with free Post-it pads printed with the Drake logo as well as temporary tattoos for children that say "Go Bulldogs."

OLYMPIC MEDALIST BROWN NAMED DRAKE WOMEN'S TRACK COACH

Earlier this week Drake officials announced that two-time U.S. Olympian Natasha Brown has been named head women's track and field coach at the University, succeeding Gary Osborn who died May 28. Brown has served the last seven years as an assistant track coach at the University of Missouri.

It will be a homecoming for Brown, a native of Des Moines who graduated from Roosevelt High School where she was a nine-time Iowa state high school champion before a distinguished career at the University of Missouri.

"This is a three-fold homecoming," said Brown, who ran a leg on the U.S. silver medal women's 4x400 relay team at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. "First, I'm excited at the thought of joining a university that I respect with all its tradition and history and one where I have had so many wonderful experiences. Secondly, it's wonderful to be returning home to a great city that nurtured me into the person I am today and lastly, to finally be near my family and old friends.

"Drake University has a tremendous cross country and track and field program. I look forward to working with the women's team. Having met a handful of team members during the interview process, I realize that there are several outstanding athletes who are excited about Drake and the future. That makes my job fun."

Brown, 33, competed in 16 Drake Relays, winning the women's special 400 at the 1990, 1993 and 1998 Drake Relays while being inducted into the 1995 Drake Relays Athletes Hall of Fame.

"Having been a competitor, spectator and coach at the Relays for so many years, it just feels right to now be working for Drake," Brown added. "I grew up not more than three miles from the stadium so I was on the campus all the time. My mother (Elayne) was a graduate of Drake and constantly spoke of the University with fond memories so I feel as though I have been here all along."

AUG. 28 DEADLINE SET FOR PARKING REGISTRATION

All University faculty, staff, and students who wish to park their vehicles in a University-owned parking lot (other than the Olmsted pay lot) for the 2000-01 academic year need to register their vehicles and purchase a parking decal or rearview mirror hang tag.

The annual fee for a parking decal is $40 and a hang tag is $50 for all faculty, staff and students. After Monday, Aug. 28, there will be parking tickets issued for vehicles parking in University-owned lots without the proper registration decal or hang tag.

The vehicle registration process can be completed at the D-Shoppe in the Olmsted Center, the University Book Store at 3003 Forest Ave., or in the Office of Student Accounts in room 102 of Old Main during normal business hours for those facilities.

The decal is to be placed on the lower left corner (driverís side) of rear window, on exterior side. The properly displayed decal authorizes parking of the vehicle in any Drake-owned parking lot on a space-available basis. Owners of vehicles parked in these lots without the registration decal or hang tag will be subject to a $10 fine and possible towing at owner's expense.
