Mural moves
to Anderson Gallery
A team from the Des Moines Art Center recently moved Drake's
33-foot mural by distinguished American painter Stuart Davis from the Upper Gallery
of Olmsted Center to the Anderson Gallery, where it will be the centerpiece of an
exhibition opening Tuesday, Sept. 5.
The exhibition, Stuart Davis' "Allée": A Modern Mural at Drake,
will celebrate Drake's 45-year ownership of Davis' largest mural and the recent gift
of two preparatory paintings donated to the University by the artist's son, Earl
Davis. The opening reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10.
At the time he painted "Allée," Stuart Davis was considered one
of America's greatest living painters. The painting was commissioned in 1955 by the
Gardner and Florence Call Cowles Foundation for the new Hubbell Dining Hall designed
by Eero Saarinen. During 1991-92, Drake loaned "Allée" to New York's
Metropolitan Museum of Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art for a major
retrospective of Davis' work.
Campus visits
soar during Iowa Private College Week
On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Drake welcomed a total of 215 prospective students
and their families to campus for special tours and information sessions during the
second annual Iowa Private College Week. Last year, the program generated a total
of 192 campus visits over five days.
Deneen Dygert, associate director of admission, said she had expected attendance
to increase because the program is now in its second year. "But I had no idea
that the program would be this popular," she added. "In the first three
days, we've exceeded last year's total for the whole week (192). I'm now hoping that
we'll reach 300 or 350 by the end of the week."
Support for the program has been strong across campus, she said. "President
Maxwell is giving 10 welcoming speeches this week. Faculty members are taking time
to meet with prospective students and their families. We also have current students
volunteering to conduct campus tours. I'm thrilled to work at a University where
faculty and students understand the importance of student recruitment."
Approximately half of this week's visitors are Iowa residents. "This program
serves not only Iowa but many other states as well," Dygert said, noting that
one prospective student traveled to Drake from Oregon to take advantage of Iowa Private
College Week.
Drake is one of 29 colleges and universities statewide participating in the program,
which is sponsored by the Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities.
Recent grad receives honors in international contest
Andy Gugel, AS'00, has received an honorable mention in Print
magazine's 37th Annual International Student Cover Design Competition.
The magazine's top three awards and nine honorable mentions were awarded to students
from four countries - Australia, Canada, Hungary and the United States.
A reproduction of Gugel's cover, a black-and-white illustration of a graduate created
with ones and zeroes, will appear in the January 2001 issue of Print magazine.
"This is quite an honor for Andy and for Drake because of the international
scope of the competition," said John Fender, assistant professor of art.
Gugel was among five Drake students who entered the competition as part of Fender's
senior-level graphic-design class spring semester.
Following graduation in May, Gugel joined the staff of Periscope, an interactive
design firm in Minneapolis.
Print magazine, published bimonthly by R.C. Publications Inc. of New York City, covers
all aspects of graphic design and visual communication.
New sources
of capital for Iowa businesses and Drake students
Iowa's entrepreneurial community, including Drake students, will gather at the first

John Pappajohn, and McLeodUSA Chairman and CEO Clark McLeod.
"My dream continues to be to help Iowa become one of the most dynamic entrepreneurial
states in the country," said Pappajohn, president of Equity Dynamics Inc. "This
conference provides an ideal opportunity for students, investors, and entrepreneurs
to form valuable relationships."

Volunteers
needed to help at Drake Farmers Market
For the rest of the season, volunteers are needed to help take down the Drake Neighborhood
Farmers Market from 6:45 to 7:15 p.m. Wednesdays in the parking lot of First Christian
Church. This involves taking down some canopy tents and carrying tables and chairs
into the Church. Also needed are crossing guards from 4 to 6 p.m. to escort market-goers
across 25th Street during heavy traffic. Those interested in volunteering should
