Shinehouse memorial service set for Sunday afternoon

Faculty, staff and students are invited to a memorial service for Patricia Shinehouse, assistant professor of flute, at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Student Center. Professor Shinehouse, 43, died of cancer on July 27.

"Patty was a marvelous musician who enriched our lives in numerous ways, a superb mentor and teacher for our students, and a treasured colleague," said President David Maxwell. "It is at sad times like this that we need to rely all the more on our sense of community -- on mutual support and comfort, and in sharing memories of a good friend."

Professor William Dougherty, chair of the music department, described Shinehouse as "an outstanding teacher and mentor who made enormous contributions to her students, the department and the University."

Dougherty noted that she initiated several important programs: the Drake Flute Choir, a first-year seminar on Women in Music and a course in World Music.

"In addition," he said, "she organized an annual world music concert series that brought ethnic performers from around the world to the Drake campus. This concert series emerged into an important part of the Des Moines multicultural scene. Her flute playing was excellent, and she was a wonderful model for her students. She will be greatly missed."

A native of Bryn Mawr, Pa., Shinehouse joined the Drake faculty in 1996. She also was the principal flutist of the Des Moines Metro Opera.

She is survived by her husband, Rohit Ramaswamy; a son, Varun Ramaswamy; her parents, Robert and Jane Shinehouse of Collegeville, Pa.; a brother and two sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Patricia Shinehouse Memorial Fund at Bankers Trust Co.

Drake hosts back-to-school Dreamer College Camp

About 40 fourth and fifth graders from the Oakridge Neighborhood spent the last two weeks of their summer vacation at Drake University, reinforcing their reading and math skills in preparation for the start of school.

The students are part of the "I Have a Dream" Foundation program founded in 1997 and sponsored by Joan Behrendt Middleton, ED'63, GR'77; Lyle Middleton, LA'61, LW'64; and Toni and Richard Jacobson.

"Kids have been really willing to dig in and do some school work -- and yuck, this is summer," Joan Middleton said. The "I Have a Dream" program provides academic support and cultural and recreational activities to at-risk children from first grade through their senior year in high school. After graduation, the program helps pay tuition for college or vocational school.

The Principal Financial Group funded the camp and five Drake students taught small groups of Dreamers every weekday morning from Aug. 7 to 18. "It's fun," said Tia Nighla, a fifth grader at Edmunds Academy. "They teach us math but it seems like a game."

Matt Gabrielson, a senior education major, said the camp helped him prepare for student teaching this fall. "I've found out what it's like to lead a group of kids and make sure they learn things," he added.
