DUE TODAY FOR FACULTY/STAFF AWARDS The deadline for nominations for the Madelyn M. Levitt Community Service Award
and the Employee Excellence Award has been extended until 4:30 p.m. today (Friday,
Sept. 6).
These awards will be presented at the Faculty and Staff Convocation on Sept. 18.

REMEMBRANCE
EVENTS PLANNED FOR SEPT. 11
There will be numerous opportunities for Drake faculty, staff and students to observe
the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington,
D.C.
Drake alumnus Robert D. Ray, former governor of Iowa and president of Drake University,
will be the keynote speaker at a remembrance ceremony at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept.
11, in Sheslow Auditorium in Old Main. There also will be a panel discussion among
local leaders of various religious faiths.
The Drake University Law School will hold an observance at 8:46 a.m. Sept. 11 - the
time the first plane hit the World Trade Center - near the sundial in Wifvat Plaza.
Four faculty members and four students will read excerpts from historic speeches
and documents that define the American people. Law classes will be dismissed from
8:40 to 9:10 a.m. so that students and faculty may attend.
There also will be several religious observances at Drake and in the Drake neighborhood.
On Sunday, Sept. 8, the Iowa chapter of Soka Gakkai International - USA, a Buddhist
organization, will hold a commemoration of Sept. 11 titled "Victory Over Violence
for the Sake of Peace." The event, which is open to the public, will take place
from 2 to 4 p.m. in room 311 of Olmsted Center.
On Sept. 11, there will be a liturgy at 8 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic
Student Center, followed by a discussion led by John Harrell, a chaplain at Mercy
Medical Center who was a volunteer at the World Trade Center site in the aftermath
of the attacks.
Drake students, faculty and staff are invited to attend a commemoration service at
7:15 p.m. Sept. 11 in the sanctuary of First Christian Church, 25th Street and University
Avenue. Cottage Grove Presbyterian Church and the Muslim community will be participating
in the nondenominational service.

DRAKE TO PARTICIPATE IN 'WALK AS ONE'
Students, faculty and staff are invited to celebrate the diversity of Greater Des
Moines and help fight bias, bigotry and racism by joining Team Drake for the "Walk
As One" walk-a-thon with the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ)
on Sunday, Sept. 15, at Gray's Lake Park.
"Walk As One" is NCCJ's largest and fastest-growing national fundraiser.
Every year, thousands of walkers across the country raise millions of dollars by
asking their friends, family members, co-workers and neighbors to sponsor them as
they walk with NCCJ.
Registration for "Walk As One" will start at 12:30 p.m. at Gray's Lake
Park, Fleur Drive and George Flagg Parkway. In addition to the walk, there will be
live entertainment and food.

RECEPTION SET FOR TONIGHT AT GALLERY
Faculty, staff and students are invited to attend today's opening reception for Clive
King's exhibition of large-scale drawings at the Anderson Gallery. The reception,
which will include a gallery talk by King at 5:30 p.m., will be held from 5 to 7
p.m. in the Anderson Gallery in the Harmon Fine Arts Center. The reception and the
exhibition are free and open to the public.
The exhibition surveys the artist's large-scale drawings since 1998. Hid multi-layered
works explore psychological responses to open-ended narratives. The exhibition will
continue through Oct. 4.

FOREIGN FILM FESTIVAL TO START SEPT. 15
This fall Drake University will present a semester-long Sunday Foreign Film Festival
featuring nine movies exploring desire, food and cultural difference. A new film
will be shown each Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Pharmacy Auditorium in the Morgan E.
Cline Hall of Pharmacy and Science.
The first film in the series, "Like Water for Chocolate," a Mexican film
released in 1992, will be shown Sept. 15. The entire series is free and open to the
public.

HIRES ASSISTANT SOFTBALL COACH KATY JENDRZEJEWSKI
Katy Jendrzejewski, who earned second team All-Mideast Region honors as co-captain
of the University of Iowa softball team in 2001, has been named assistant softball
coach at Drake University. She will join head coach Rich Calvert in his first year
at Drake.
"I'm really excited to work under Rich after playing for him for four years,"
said Jendrzejewski. "The girls have been really hard workers and practice has
been going well. I know it's only going to move in a positive direction with Rich
at the helm."
Jendrzejewski, who is originally from Portland, Ore., was a member of the Iowa softball
team from 1997-2001, where she was named captain in 2000-2001. She earned third team
All-Big Ten Conference, second team All-Mideast Region and NCAA Region Seven All-Tournament
team honors during her senior season in 2001. She led the Hawkeyes with a .398 batting
average and an on base percentage of .473 her senior year, and was second on the
team with seven home runs and 34 RBIs. In the fall of 2001, she became the graduate
assistant coach for the Hawkeyes before transferring to Portland State as a volunteer
assistant coach for the 2002 spring season.
Jendrzejewski received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University
of Iowa in December 2001, while earning Academic All-Big Ten honors from 1997-2001.
DRAKE
TO HOLD MUSIC CLASSES FOR YOUNG CHILDREN
This fall the Drake University Community School of Music will sponsor the Musik Garden
program, a series of music classes for parents and children from birth to age 5.
The program, which begins Friday, Sept. 20, increases children's curiosity about
music, establishes a foundation for singing and musical thought, enhances listening
skills and musical aptitude and helps parents build a strong musical bond with their
children.
The classes will be held on Friday afternoons at Drake's Harmon Fine Arts Center.
A parent orientation for all three classes will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17,
in room 204 of the Harmon Fine Arts Center. Tuition and registration fees vary. For
