On Campus - Faculty and Staff News September 28, 2000 Vol. 53, No. 16 Patricia Prijatel, the E.T. Meredith distinguished professor of journalism and mass communication, was quoted extensively in a Sept. 15 article in USA Today. The article, titled "Editors turn to readers for cover choices," noted that more magazine editors are surveying readers about their preferences. Barbara Quijano Decker, LA'72, GR' 83, vice provost of human resources, graduated from the Drake University Law School with a doctor of jurisprudence degree in May after five years as a part-time law student. She was admitted to the Iowa State Bar on Sept.11 . Birgit Wassmuth, professor of advertising, presented a research paper on "Online Newspapers: Collating Banner Advertising with Editorial Content" at the annual convention of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, which was held Aug. 9-13 in Phoenix. The co-author of the paper was David R. Thompson of Loras College. Law professor Neil Hamilton, director of the Agricultural Law Center, taught a one-credit course on "American Agricultural Law and Policy" for graduate law students at the University of Nantes in France in May. Also in May, Hamilton participated in a conference in Nantes on "Current Problems Posed by the Use of Genetically Modified Organisms in the Food System." He spoke on "The American Position on GMO's and Future Prospects." In June, Hamilton's article, "Preserving Farmland, Creating Farms and Feeding Communities: Opportunities to Link Farmland Protection and Community Food Security," appeared in the Northern Illinois University Law Review. Leanne Freeman-Miller, assistant professor of voice, performed a recital on Sept. 10 in Vacaville, Calif., sponsored by the North Bay Opera Co. She was accompanied by Michelle Havlik-Jergens, Drake's staff accompanist. Freeman-Miller also has been elected as president of the Iowa NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) Chapter. Drake will host the district NATS auditions Nov. 3-4. Jane Rankin, associate professor of psychology, had an article titled "Age/Cohort Differences in Judgments About Criminal Transgressions" published in the most recent issue of the Journal of Adult Development. Richard Abel, professor of English, presented an invited paper titled "Finding the French on American Screens, 1910-1914," at the NorFA Research Seminar on Reception: Film, TV, Digital Culture at Stockholm University in June. Tom Cross, assistant professor of management, has published an article in the Journal of Applied Psychology titled "Effects of Task Performance and Contextual Performance on Systemic Rewards." The paper examined the impact of employee helpfulness on reward outcomes. Susan Sidney Smith, professor of education, presented two papers this past summer at the International Literacy Conference in Keszthely, Hungary. In her first paper she described the progress of the Reading, Writing, Critical Thinking project that she is working with in the country of Georgia. In her second paper, she presented the international standards developed for evaluation of the project in all 20 Eastern European countries. Myron Marty, the Ann G. and Sigurd E. Anderson university professor, has published the Second Edition of Nearby History: Exploring the Past Around You (AltaMira Press). Coauthored with David Kyvig of Northern Illinois University, this is a substantial revision of the initial edition published in 1982. Two Drake alumni, David Johns, GR'98, and Jason Watson, AS'98, served as research assistants on the project. Aimee Beckmann-Collier, associate professor of conducting and director of choral studies, recently presented sessions on conducting gesture and rehearsal techniques to assist stylistic accuracy to the annual conference of the Missouri Choral Directors Association. She will return to that state in January 2002 to conduct the Missouri All-State Chorus. She also was a clinician for a week-long conference of the United Methodist Church's North Central Jurisdictional Fellowship of Musicians in August. In addition, she recently presented a session at Wartburg College for the Iowa Choral Directors Association Fall Symposium. Thomas E. Grouling, assistant director of international programs and services, was a special guest speaker at a seminar on "Business Immigration Law in Iowa," held on Sept. 15. He gave a presentation on "Employment of Foreign Students." Human resource managers and executives from 35 Iowa businesses attended the seminar. |
