RENOWNED GRAPHIC DESIGNER TO SPEAK TONIGHT

Chip Kidd, who has been described as "the closest thing there is to a rock star in the rarefied world of high-end graphic design," will speak at Drake tonight in conjunction with the "AIGA 50 Books/50 Covers" exhibit at the Anderson Gallery.

Kidd's speech, which is free and open to the public, will start 6:30 p.m. in Sheslow Auditorium. The gallery in the Harmon Fine Arts Center will be open one hour prior to the speech. Kidd's speech is titled " Who are the Cheese Monkeys, and What Do They Want?" The title refers to his first novel, The Cheese Monkeys, which was released by Scribner on Tuesday.

Kidd is associate art director of book jackets and special projects at Alfred A. Knopf, the venerable New York publishing house. Since joining Knopf in 1986, he has created more than 1,500 jacket designs for authors such as Anne Rice, Cormac McCarthy, John Updike and Howard Stern. His design for Michael Crichton' s Jurassic Park became one of the most recognizable images of the 1990s.

"AIGA 50 Books/50 Covers" will be on display through Sunday, Sept. 30. The exhibit features the 100 best-designed books and covers of 1999 as selected by a jury of nationally renowned and influential book designers in a competition sponsored by the American Institute of Graphic Arts. The Anderson Gallery is open from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

A forum on "Emotional Reactions to Traumatic Events" will start at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, in the Olmsted Center Conference Rooms.

This forum will discuss various reactions (e.g., emotional, behavioral, cognitive, physical, interpersonal) to traumatic events, particularly the events of Sept. 11, that individuals may experience as well as suggestions on how to cope with such traumatic occurrences. Panelists include Greg Febbraro, assistant professor of psychology, and Richard Sheehy, visiting assistant professor of education.

A forum on "Resentment of the U.S." will be held on Thursday, Oct. 4. The time and place will be announced next week. Panelists will include faculty members Deb DeLaet, Edie Moore and Dan Spencer as well as professor emeritus Walter Clark. Provost Ron Troyer will be the moderator.

REGISTER PUBLISHER TO SPEAK AT LET'S DU LUNCH OCT. 3

Mary P. Stier, president and publisher of The Des Moines Register, will be the featured speaker at the second Let's DU Lunch event of the fall season on Wednesday, Oct. 3. She will discuss life at the newspaper in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C.
Stier will speak instead of Greg Hanner, principal of CEG Development, who had been scheduled to give a presentation about development along Court Avenue. Hanner canceled his speech due to pressing matters he needed to address in Boston.

Stier has been president and publisher of The Des Moines Register since August 2000. She also serves as senior group president of the Gannett Midwest Newspaper Group, which includes 16 daily newspapers in Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan.

The Let's DU Lunch series, which is open to the public, is sponsored by Drake University's Central Iowa Alumni Chapter and the Greater Des Moines Partnership. Each luncheon is held at 11:30 a.m. on the first Wednesday of the month at the Younkers Tea Room in downtown Des Moines.
The fall series will conclude on Nov. 7 with a presentation by Dave Vellinga, president and CEO of Mercy Medical Center, about the future of health care.

For reservations, call the Drake Office of Alumni and Parent Programs at x3848. The cost is $15 for each luncheon.
UPDATED JOB DESCRIPTIONS TO HELP IN COMPENSATION STUDY

"You're the Key to Drake's Future" will be the message to Drake staff this fall. In an effort to assess Drake's compensation and human resources practices, the University is asking all non-faculty, non-bargaining employees to provide input into the development of updated job descriptions. The effort acknowledges that employees are the "key to Drake's future" and, therefore, should play a key role in the project.

"Rather than make assumptions about what duties are included in a particular job, we want the people actually doing the work to describe their functions," said Venessa Macro, director of human resources. "The more accurate this information, the better we will be able to compare Drake's jobs to others within the relevant labor market."

The first step in this process will begin the first and second week of October when all employees will be asked to attend a group session. At that session, employees will fill out a job position description questionnaire. "To make things fun each attending employee will have the chance to sign up for a give-away of several prizes. Employees will also receive a small token of appreciation for their effort," Macro said.

The information gathered at these meetings will then be used to devise updated job descriptions and compare Drake jobs to relevant market data. With that information, Drake will be able to determine how its compensation practices compare to others within our peer group and other Des Moines employers. "That information will help us take steps to be more competitive and advance internal equity as economic resources allow," Macro said.

All sessions will take place in Levitt Hall in Old Main. All non-faculty, non-bargaining unit employees will receive an invitation via campus mail with their group assignments no later than today (Sept. 28). If you have not received an assignment by the end of the day, please contact Human Resources at x3133.
All meetings will start on time. Although the meetings are scheduled to last two hours, it is anticipated that most sessions will end sooner.

"If you are scheduled during your lunch break, please make arrangements with your manager to take lunch at another time," Macro said. "We ask that managers be as flexible as possible so that all may participate."
