PERFORM 'THE SONG GOES ON: MONTEVERDI TO JAZZ'
The Drake Choir, Chamber Choir and Chorale, directed by Aimee Beckmann-Collier
and Ryan Beeken, will perform music from madrigals to jazz at 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct.
8, on the Jordan Stage in Sheslow Auditorium in Old Main. The performance is free

DEDICATE LANGUAGE LEARNING CENTER MONDAY
Drake University will formally dedicate the Jane E. Evans Language Learning Center
in room 323 of Meredith Hall at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9.
A resident of Pebble Beach, Calif., Evans, LA'59, funded the center with a $250,000
gift to Drake. She will attend the dedication ceremony along with her husband, John,
the retired president, CEO and chairman of Allied Insurance. Monday's dedication
will be the first time the couple has been on campus since the center opened last
fall.
Jane Evans will speak at the dedication as will Drake President David Maxwell, Drake
Provost Ronald Troyer and Arthur Hughes, assistant professor of Spanish and director
of the Evans Language Learning Center at Drake. PROF.
WORTHEN TO DISCUSS KIRSCHENBAUM EXHIBITION
Thomas Worthen, associate professor of art, will give a talk Tuesday, Oct. 10, in
conjunction with the new Anderson Gallery exhibition titled "A Matchless Clarity:
Paintings and Studies by Jules Kirschenbaum."
The retrospective exhibition, which presents more than 40 years of work by the distinguished
artist and former Drake faculty member, will open Sunday, Oct. 8, with an opening
reception from 2 to 4 p.m.
Worthen, a colleague of Kirschenbaum's for 30 years, is co-curator of the exhibition
as is Marie Louise "Loulou" Kane, director of the Anderson Gallery.
Worthen's talk, which will start at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the gallery in the Harmon Fine
Arts Center, is titled "Drawings by Jules Kirschenbaum: The Heavenly, the Earthly
and the Stupid."
The exhibition will continue through Nov. 5. The gallery is open from noon to 4 p.m.

ORCHESTRA TO OPEN SEASON TUESDAY
The Drake Symphony Orchestra, John Canarina conducting, will open its 2000-2001 season
on Tuesday, October 10, at 8 p.m. on the Jordan Stage in Sheslow Auditorium in Old
Main. The concert is free and open to the public.
Faculty pianist Chiu-Ling Lin will the featured soloist in Rachmaninoff's popular
"Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini." In addition, Schubert's "Unfinished"
Symphony will be performed in memory of Patricia Shinehouse, Drake's professor of
flute who died this past summer.
Rounding out the program will be the Overture, "The Fountain of Youth,"
by American composer/conductor Thomas Briccetti, and the Berceuse and Finale from
"The Firebird" by Igor Stravinsky. AMBASSADOR
LARSON TO SPEAK AT DRAKE THURSDAY
Ambassador Alan P. Larson, under secretary of state for economic, business and agricultural
affairs, will speak at Drake on Thursday, Oct. 12, before participating in the World
Food Prize Symposium. His Drake talk, which will focus on agriculture, foreign policy
and foreign trade, will start at 11 a.m. in room 102 of Meredith Hall. The event,
which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Drake chapter of Omicron
Delta Epsilon, an economics honor society.
Larson's responsibilities include the entire range of international economic policy.
Before assuming his current post in November 1999, he served in other leadership
positions such as assistant secretary and principal deputy assistant secretary of
state for economic and business affairs as well as deputy assistant secretary for
international finance and development.
From 1990 to 1993, he served as American ambassador to the Organization for Economic
Cooperation and Development in Paris. Earlier in his career, Larson served in economic
sections in U.S. embassies in Jamaica, Zaire and Sierra Leone. He holds a Ph.D. in
economics from the University of Iowa. DRAKE BASKETBALL
TIP OFF BREAKFAST SET FOR OCT. 27
Reservations are now being accepted for the annual Drake University Basketball Tip-Off
Breakfast Oct. 27 at the Hotel Savery in downtown Des Moines.
The buffet breakfast will start at 7 a.m. with the program scheduled to start at
7:30 a.m. Athletic Director Dave Blank along with women's basketball coach Lisa Stone
and men's basketball coach Kurt Kanaskie will be the featured speakers, previewing
the upcoming basketball season.
The cost of the breakfast is $15 per person with an Oct. 23 deadline for making reservations.

'BULLDOG HAUNTED HOOPS' SET OCT. 29
Central Iowa area basketball fans can catch a sneak preview of the Drake University
men's and women's basketball teams by attending the Bulldog Haunted Hoops at the
Drake Knapp Center Sunday, Oct. 29.
Doors to the Drake Knapp Center open at 4 p.m. with festivities scheduled to begin
at 4:30 p.m. Both the men's and women's basketball teams will be introduced to the
public followed by 12-minute intrasquad scrimmages from each team.
Other activities include a Halloween parade, for kids 14 years and under; a three-point
shooting contest involving members of the Drake women's team followed by a dunking
display with members of the Bulldog men's basketball team. One lucky Drake student
will have an opportunity to win one semester's tuition participating in a half-court
shot.
All fans attending the Bulldog Haunted Hoops will get free Drake men's and women's
basketball posters. Members of the Drake men's and women's basketball teams also
will be available to autograph the posters.
Kurt Kanaskie, entering his fifth year as head men's basketball coach, has six returning
letterwinners including two starters back from last year's squad which posted an
11-18 record. Senior guard Lamont Evans, named to the 1999-2000 All-Missouri Valley
Conference Newcomer team, heads the list of returning veterans after finishing second
in the league in assists. Drake will open a 15-game home season, playing host to
the University of Iowa Nov. 21 at the Drake Knapp Center.
Lisa Stone, in her first year as head coach of the Bulldog women's program, inherits
a squad which has four starters back from last year's team which finished 23-7 winning
the Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships while
advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in six years.
