Sherry Barrett,
a senior consultant at Career Resources Group, recently conducted the first
of four professional development
sessions
at Drake on "Excellence
in Service." The sessions focus on the unique challenges of providing
quality service in the higher education environment.
Barrett, author of Keep Them Calling! Superior Service on the Telephone,
stressed the importance of motivating people to serve constituents with excellence,
identifying
barriers to excellence in service and practicing service strategies that
will delight constituents. She noted that Drake should not just satisfy constituents,
but delight them.
She also encouraged those in attendance at the first session to "own the
issue" and deliver "knock their socks office service" by being
professional, giving a speedy response, providing accurate information, showing
genuine concern and having reliable follow-through. She emphasized that people "do
not care what we know; they want to know that we care."
The remaining sessions are scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 20, 9 a.m. to noon
Oct. 21 and 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 27 in Levitt Hall. Refreshments will be served.

The kicking shoe
of Billy Cundiff recently arrived at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton,
Ohio. The Dallas Cowboys placekicker
converted seven field goals
in his team's 35-32 overtime win over the New York Giants on Sept. 15.
The shoe will be added to an exhibit that chronicles the select group of
kickers who've had seven field goals in a single game.
Cundiff tied a National Football League record by making seven field goals,
including the game-winning 25-yard kick with 5 minutes 56 seconds remaining
in overtime.
The former Drake All-American had field goals of 37, 49, 42, 21, 36, 52 and
25 yards to share the NFL mark with former Cowboys kicker Chris Boniol, Rich
Karlis
of Minnesota and Jim Bakken of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Cundiff had sent the game into overtime by hitting a pro career-long 52 yard
field goal on the final play of regulation.
"
Right now this is probably one of the highest moments in my career," added
Cundiff, the only four-time, first-team all-league performer in the history of
the Pioneer Football League. "I'll enjoy it while I can."
Cundiff set 15 Drake and Pioneer Football League records during his career
from 1998-2001.
