On Campus - Faculty and Staff News October 27, 2000 - Vol. 53, No. 20 Mary Hansen, assistant professor of nursing, recently received the Teresa E. Christy Award at the Iowa Nurses' Association annual convention. This award is presented annually, at the state level, to a registered nurse who has demonstrated professional commitment to the improvement of health care and the interrelationship of nursing education, nursing practice and nursing research. William P. Dougherty, professor of music, has had his Accumulations for Brass Band published by Black Squirrel Music. The work was released on CD this September, and is performed by the Brass Band of Columbus. The wind ensemble transcription of this composition, written for the Drake University Wind Symphony, has been accepted for publication by the same publishing firm. Dougherty's first string quartet, Episodes, was given three performances last May by the Pioneer String Quartet. The work was commissioned by the Salisbury House Foundation. Thomas Swiss, professor of English, gave a paper on the popular press and its relation to popular music studies at the recent "Craft and Critique" conference at the University of Iowa. Swiss and Andrew Herman, associate professor of sociology, have published a hypermedia essay on "Media, the Web, and Community" in the journal Enculturation. Barbara Hodgdon, the Ellis and Nelle Levitt professor of English emeritus, presented an invited lecture, "Richard III: The Pleasures of His Company, or, Getting Over the Hump," for a series on Shakespeare's characters at the Huntington Library in San Marino, Calif., on Sept. 27. Scott Yetmar, assistant professor of accounting, recently published an article titled "Tax Practitioners, Ethical Sensitivity: A Model and Empirical Examination" in the Journal of Business Ethics. Dean Wright, professor of sociology, and Susan Wright, interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, presented a keynote address titled "MU and the Midwest Sociological Society" as part of the Centennial Symposium celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Department of Sociology, University of Missouri, Columbia, on Sept. 29 at the University of Missouri. The Wrights chair the Alumni Board for the Department of Sociology, University of Missouri. Gary I. Wade, associate professor of journalism and mass communication, has returned from two weeks in the former Soviet Republic of Turkmenistan. Wade lectured and worked with students at Turkmen State University on producing modern student-based television programs. He also met with the state television director, professional producers, independent producers and ministers of youth, education and culture to encourage development of a student-based television channel. Wade was a guest of the U.S. ambassador to Turkmenistan. |
