Richard Abel, the Ellis and Nelle Levitt professor of English, presented an invited lecture, "The 'Imagined Community' of the Western, 1911-1912," for an American Studies series at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena,
Calif., on Oct. 2.

Thomas E. Baker, the James Madison chair in constitutional law and director of the Constitutional Law Center, was a panelist on "U.S. Supreme Court: Year in Review" for LAW.COM during an online symposium Sept. 11-26 that brought together a distinguished panel of scholars, Supreme Court insiders and attorneys who argued some of the most controversial cases of the 1999-2000 term to discuss the ramifications of each crucial decision. LAW.COM is affiliated with the National Law Journal.

Myron Marty, the Ann G. and Sigurd E. Anderson university professor, conducted a workshop on Sept. 28 at the annual meeting of the American Institute of Architects of Iowa on "Becoming An Architect Frank Lloyd Wright's Way." He also gave a luncheon speech titled "Distinctive Perspectives on Frank Lloyd Wright."

Robert Hariman, the Ellis and Nelle Levitt professor of rhetoric and communication studies, recently presented a paper titled "Constitutive Processes and Performative Functions in Visual Media" and co-authored with John Lucaites
(Indiana University) at a conference at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada.

Rod Henshaw, dean of Cowles Library, served as discussion leader for the session, "Digital Libraries: Progress and Challenges," at the EDUCAUSE Conference held Oct. 10-13 in Nashville, Tenn. Henshaw also is now serving on the Conference Planning Committee, Iowa Library Association. He attended the ILA annual planning retreat at
Central College Nov. 3.

Bruce Horner, associate professor of English, was invited to be a featured speaker at this year's Watson Conference on Rhetoric and Composition at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ken., where he delivered a presentation on "Revaluing Academic Work in Composition." Horner also has recently been elected to serve a three-year term on the Executive Committee of the National Conference on College Composition and Communication.

Thomas F. Willoughby, dean of admission, gave a presentation about online admissions applications at the 56th national conference of the National Association for College Admission Counseling in Washington, D.C., on Oct 4. The presentation, "Carpe Diem: Seizing the Day for Web Applications," gave a behind-the-scenes look at the decision making, outsourcing, implementation and outreach strategies adopted to make the online admissions application a success at Drake University.
