DRAKE
APPOINTS NATIONAL ADVISORY BOARD ON DIVERSITY
Drake University President David Maxwell announced today that he has appointed
a 16-member National Advisory Board on Diversity.
"Promoting diversity is of tremendous importance to Drake," President
Maxwell said. "It will be immensely helpful to have input from community
leaders and alumni as we work to ensure that Drakestudents, faculty and staff
are able to function effectively as members of diverse local, national and global
communities."
Maxwell said
he is very pleased that "everyone we asked to be on the advisory board has
agreed to serve." In a letter to board members, Maxwell said their primary
responsibility will be "to review theUniversity's goals in the area of diversity,
to help us assess our progress, to give us the wisdom derived from their own experience,
expertise and external perspective, and to serve as a sounding board for our ideas
and goals as we move forward."
The National
Advisory Board on Diversity will meet for the first time Saturday, Nov. 16. The
meeting will give board members the opportunity to talk with the three-member
Diversity Audit Teamvisiting Drake this week at the invitation of President Maxwell.
The Diversity Audit Team consists of Myrna Adams, recently retired associate provost
for equity at Duke University; J. Herman Blake, director of African American studies
at Iowa State University; andAlbert Ramirez, professor emeritus of psychology
at the University of Colorado at Boulder. "We're here as partners in institutional
change," Adams said. "We want to listen and learn and to use our experience
and expertise to offer whatever assistance we can to help the University achieve
its goals."
The National Advisory Board on Diversity is Drake's 10th national advisory board.
These boards provide valuable advice and perspective to the University on critical
issues. There already is a nationaladvisory board for each of Drake's six colleges
and schools and for technology, Cowles Library and the National Alumni Board.

SCHOOL TO HOLD OPEN HOUSE TUESDAY
Drake Law School will host an open house on Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 2:30 to 3:30
p.m. in the Quiet Lounge located on the second floor of Cartwright Hall for undergraduate
and graduate students interesting in attending law school. Undergraduate faculty
advisers are also encouraged to attend.
Admissions and financial aid staff will be on hand to answer questions, as will
law school deans, faculty and current law students. For more information about

WRITERS FOR DRAKE WRITERS' NIGHT THURSDAY
All Drake writers are invited to join in an open reading of poetry and prose during
Drake Writers' Night at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in the Medbury Honors Lounge.
Drake Writers' Night, which is presented by the Writers and Critics Series and
the English Department, seeks to bring writers from all corners of the Drake community
together to share their work. Upon arrival, all writers are encouraged to sign

DRAKE
CHORAL/ORCHESTRAL CONCERT SET FOR NOV. 24
Drake's four choral ensembles, in collaboration with a special orchestra of Drake
faculty and students under the direction of Aimee Beckmann-Collier, will perform
Mozart's "Requiem" at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, at the Civic Center
of Greater Des Moines. The Drake Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Clarence Padilla,
will perform Prelude and Fugue ("The Spitfire") by William Walton and
excerpts from "L'Arlesienne" by George Bizet. Tickets, which are $7
for students and $15 for non-studnets, are available at the Drake Fine Arts Box
Office (x3841), the Civic Center Box Office or through Ticket Master (243-1888).
WORKSHOP
TO FOCUS ON HOW TO MANAGE SPAM
The Office of Information Technology is sponsoring a workshop on How to Manage
SPAM from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, and Tuesday, Nov. 26, in Bulldog Theater
in Olmsted Center.
"While SPAM is almost impossible to avoid entirely, there are effective strategies
for minimizing our exposure to it and dealing with the messages that arrive anyway,"
said Bob Hoehle,director of microcomputer services.
The workshops will include general information about SPAM, what Drake is doing
to reduce it, what you can do to avoid it, and what to do with it once you receive
it. The workshop will include detailed demonstrations of tools in Eudora, Microsoft
Outlook and Drake's web-based email client you can use to manage the SPAM you
receive.
No registration is necessary.

NAMED TO COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT FOOTBALL TEAM
Drake senior
safety Desmond Carr (Lee's Summit, Mo.) has been named to the Verizon/CoSIDA (College
Sports Information Directors of America) first team Academic All-District VII
University Division Football Team.
Drake senior fullback Eric Buer (Norwalk) and senior defensive tackle Jason Dvorak
(Elberon) were named to the second team Academic All-District VII University Division
team.
Carr was one of 24 student athletes chosen to the elite first-team squad which
represents 12 NCAA I or NCAA I-AA football schools from the states of Colorado,
Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska and Wyoming.
Carr is now eligible to be named on the Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America football
team which will be released Dec. 2.
To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with
at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his career.He
must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing. True freshmen, redshirt
freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible.
Carr, who was a co-captain on Drake this fall, is majoring in information services.
He ranked fourth on Drake with 69 tackles, including 46 solo hits. He also had
a team-high six pass break ups and a 12-yard tackle for loss.
Buer is majoring in accounting, while Dvorak is majoring in business management.

HEADS MVC MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY SCHOLAR ATHLETE TEAM
Drake, which finished second in the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Cross Country
Championships, has landed the most student-athletes on the Valley Scholar-Athlete
Cross Country Team.
The Bulldogs placed junior Brent Wilberts (Shoreview, Minn.), sophomore Bobby
Anderson (Mason City) and sophomore Kyle Sounhein (Crystal Lake, Ill.) on the
elite 10-man squad.
The Scholar-Athlete Team is a unique Valley award in that it accounts for academic
and athletic excellence. The criteria for team voting parallels the Verizon/CoSIDA
(College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for academic All-America
voting. Those eligible must have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average.
Wilberts, who finished fourth in the MVC Championships, is majoring in accounting
Anderson, who was seventh in the MVC Championships, is majoring in biology. Sounhein,
who was 20th in the MVC Championships, is enrolled in liberal arts.
The trio will lead the Drake squad at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships
Saturday in Normal, Ill.

YOUR CALENDAR FOR BASKETBALL LUNCHEONS
Drake fans are invited to luncheons at Christopher's Restaurant in Beaverdale
throughout the season to hear the inside scoop on Drake basketball from coaches
Kurt Kanaskie and Lisa Stone. The coaches will review previous games as well as
comment on upcoming opponents and current events in the program.
The first Tip-Off Luncheon for the men's basketball team will start at 11:30 a.m.
Monday, Nov. 25. The cost is $11 per person. Additional Tip-Off Luncheons will
be held on Dec. 10, Jan. 7 and Feb. 3.
Fast Break Luncheons for the women's basketball team will begin at 11:30 a.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 20, at Christopher's Restaurant. The cost is $11 per person. The
luncheons will continue on Dec. 16, Jan. 14 and Feb. 4.
