Law professor Neil D. Hamilton, director of the Agricultural Law Center, was the keynote speaker on Sept. 5 for the Marshalltown Rotary Rural Urban Day, on the topic of "Creating a Food Policy for Iowa." He also participated in a Sept. 8 training session on "Legal Issues in Direct Farm Marketing" sponsored by the Iowa State Cooperative Extension Service and held at the Iowa Arboretum near Madrid. In addition, he spoke to the Association of Food Journalists at its annual meeting in Kansas City on Sept. 9. He participated on a panel addressing food safety and the use of genetically modified organisms. On Sept. 23, Hamilton was the keynote speaker at the Organic Farms and Food Day held in West Union, Iowa, and sponsored by the Northeast Iowa Organic Food Association. He spoke on "Promoting Local Foods in Iowa."

Thomas E. Baker, the James Madison chair in constitutional law and director of the Constitutional Law Center, has two new publications. The first, "Towards a 'More Perfect Union,'" was the leas article in the inaugural issue of Insights on Law & Society, published by the American bar Association Division for Public Education. The second, "Some Preliminary Comments on the Final Report of the White Commission," was published in volume 15 of The Journal of Law & Politics at the University of Virginia, in a special issue on the Commission on Structural Alternatives for the Federal Cours of Appeals.

Thomas Rosburg, assistant professor of biology, presented the opening keynote address at the Seventeenth North American Prarie Conference, held at Nothern Iowa Area Community College, Mason City, Iowa, from July 16-20. The title of the presentation was "Iowa's Prarie Heritage: The Past, Present and into the Future." He halso presented a scientific paper at the conference. It was titled "Effects of Late Spring Fire on the Survival, Growth, and Reproduction of Prarie Forbs." More recently, he presented an invited paper at the Iowa Invasive Species Conference, held at Iowa Stat University on Oct. 6-7. The paper was titled "introduced Graminoids of Iowa."

An article by Lee Jolliffe, associate professor of magazines, has been accepted by Journalism History for its Summer 2000 issue. "Singing and Selling Seeds: The Live Music Era on Rural Midwestern Radio Stations" is co-authered by J. Steven Smethers of Oklahoma State and features interviews with musicians from Iowa's KMA and KFNF, among others.

Bruce Gilbert, associate professor of librarianship, presented a paper on "Information Literacy and Information Ethics" at the 4th annual Ethics of Electronic Information in the 21st Century Symposium, held in Memphis from Oct. 5-8.

C. David Harris, the Ellis and Nelle Levitt professor of music history and harpsichord, has had his edition of Vincent Lubeck's Clavier Uebung (1728) published in The Broude Trust's Critical Facsimile series.

Susan Sidney Smith, professor of education, recently published an article in the international journal, Thinking Classrooms. The article, titled "From Communism to Reform: Through the Eyes of Georgians," depicts school reform in the Republic of Georgia both before and after the downfall of Communism.

Barbara Hodgdon, the Ellis and Nelle Levitt professor emeritus of English, gave an invited lecture and seminar on Richard III at the Shakespeare Institute, Stratford-upon-Avon, on Oct. 19.
