The Society of Financial Examiners Education Foundation has awarded a grant of
$40,000 to the Kelley Insurance Center at Drake University. The grant is intended
to fund an educational seminar for senior financial state insurance regulators.
The seminar will provide scholarships for the senior financial regulators selected
to attend the three-day event. Twenty-six regulators from 17 states and the Virgin
Islands have been selected and awarded scholarships. The seminar will be offered
during the second week of January 2001 on the Drake campus. COLLEGE
PRESIDENTS TO DISCUSS HIGHER EDUCATION IN IOWA
Drake President David Maxwell will join other college and university presidents
in discussing the challenges facing higher education in Iowa during a roundtable
discussion on Wednesday, Dec. 13, at the Hotel Savery in downtown Des Moines. News
media representatives from across the state have been invited to the event, which
will start with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and a panel discussion
from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Joining President Maxwell in the roundtable discussion will be the presidents of
Grinnell College, Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, the University of
Northern Iowa and Simpson College. LONGTIME
HISTORY PROFESSOR DIES
Lewis A. Hainlin, professor emeritus of history at Drake, died of complications
of cancer on Thursday, Dec. 7, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. He was 69.
Private services are planned, according to Dahlstrom Family Funeral Care. Burial
will be in Watertown, Minn.
A native of Winsted, Minn., professor Hainlin joined the Drake faculty in 1962 and
retired in 1992.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila; his mother, A.A. Hainlin of Minnesota; two sons,
Lewis and Nathan, both of Clive; three brothers, a sister and nieces and nephews. GET A HEAD
START ON THE HOLIDAYS WITH A GRAND BUFFET
Drake Dining Services will be featuring a "Home for the Holidays" Grand
Buffet from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, in Parents Hall in Olmsted Center. Both
the Terrace Food Court and Campus Crossroads-Ultimate Dining (Hubbell South) will
be closed for dinner that day.
The buffet will feature stuffed roasted pork loin, cornish game hens stuffed with
wild rice, Vietnamese shrimp and noodles as well as curry chicken. The price of admission
is $4.95 for cash, declining balance and club cards, or one board meal. HOLIDAY
RECEPTION SET FOR WEDNESDAY
Drake President David Maxwell has invited all faculty and staff to an "All
University Holiday Reception" from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, in the Olmsted
Center Upper Gallery.
"With all the challenges and uncertainty we've faced this fall, and all
of the hard work and time commitment that everyone has contributed all year long,
this is an important opportunity for us to step back from the rigors of work (and
Program Review!) and enjoy one another's company for a few hours," President

RESCHEDULED
The Drake University Faculty Brass Quintet, originally scheduled to perform on
Dec. 5, will give a concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, on the Jordan Stage in
Sheslow Auditorium in Old Main. Admission is free.
Drake Jazz Combo Night, an informal concert originally scheduled for Dec. 7, will
be held at 10 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, in the Mainstay, just east of the Drake Knapp

IN ATTENDING 'RAGTIME' AT THE CIVIC CENTER
Faculty and staff are invited to join Drake alumni and friends in attending the
central Iowa premiere of the musical "Ragtime" at the Civic Center of Greater
Des Moines on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001. A reception featuring hors d'oeuvres and
a cash bar will start at 6:30 p.m. in the West Balcony Lounge. The performance will
start at 8 p.m.
The cost of the reception and performance is $60 per person. Reservations may be
