In celebration of Iowa Private College Week, Drake faculty, students and staff are encouraged to wear their Drake blue and Drake logo apparel Aug. 7 to 11. Iowa Private College Week is a statewide effort to show parents and prospective students the opportunities afforded to young scholars at schools such as Drake. During that week, every person you meet is a potential prospective student or parent. Please take time to greet them, help them along the way and show them what a magnificent experience Drake University is.

Drake Day @ The Iowa State Fair celebrates 125 years in photographs, memories
 Drake will celebrate its 125th anniversary with a display of photographs and memories at the Iowa State Fair.Thousands of Drake alumni, friends and fans are set to storm the Iowa State Fairgrounds on Saturday, Aug. 12, in celebration of Drake Day @ The Iowa State Fair.Drake will show photographs and memories from its 125 years of history in a museum-like timeline stretching back to the University's roots through today. Also, members of various Drake Bulldog teams will sign autographs and give temporary tattoos to youth and other Bulldog boosters. The first 3,000 guests will receive a free set of 10 post cards displaying Drake moments or get your picture taken in front of one of three historic backgrounds - the 1881 construction of Old Main, a 1914 graduation processional or running in the Drake Relays with Olympian Wilma Rudolph in 1961. Drake will also offer special discounts on its 125th anniversary coffee table book, "Drake University," with photographs by Pulitzer Prize winner David Peterson - a former Drake Relays competitor from his Kansas State University days. "Drake University" will be available for order at the discounted price of $32.95 - 20 percent off - only at the Iowa State Fair.

Carry a tune back to dear ol' Drake
The Drake University Community School of Music is set to begin its 16-week fall session on Aug. 28. DUCSOM offers individual instruction for children and adults at all levels in piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, harp, organ and music theory. Voice instruction is also available for those 15 and older.The fall session of the DUCSOM Young Violinist program also begins Aug. 28. The program is designed for children ages 3 to 8. Students receive both individual and class instruction weekly. Activities include learning Suzuki pieces and children's songs in Suzuki style, note reading - separate from playing the violin - counting rhythms, beginning theory, practice performing and playing music as a group. Tuition for the fall semester is $352 plus a $25 new student enrollment fee. A limited number of scholarships are available and faculty and staff members and their immediate families receive a substantial discount. Move over Cyclones, Drake invades Ames: CBPA to offer MPA at Mary Greeley
Drake will offer its Master of Public Administration program at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, beginning with the 2006 fall semester.Faculty members from Drake's College of Business and Public Administration in Des Moines will teach classes on Friday evenings and Saturdays at Mary Greeley Medical Center, 1111 Duff Ave., Ames. There's still time to register before the Aug. 15 deadline. Classes will begin on Sept. 8. Drake's MPA program is designed for individuals who want to develop superior executive, public policy and resource management expertise to successfully lead a public or nonprofit organization. The curriculum is a 36-credit hour degree program that can be completed on a part-time schedule of two consecutive classes per semester in two calendar years. This will be the second Drake program offered at Mary Greeley. The University previously conducted a Certificate in Health Care Administration program at the medical center. "We have worked with Drake in the past and found the University's programs to be very beneficial," said Mary Greeley Vice President Toni Shropshire. "We're very pleased to be able to continue to collaborate with Drake and bring quality programming to Ames and surrounding communities." King crowned director of Anderson Gallery
 Heather KingHeather King has been named the new director of Drake's Anderson Gallery.King received her bachelor's degree in art history and studio art from the University of Iowa in 2004. She previously worked as project manager at the State Historical Museum and as a museum technician at the University of Iowa Museum of Art. Her duties at Drake began Aug. 1. "My goal is to use the gallery as a space to bring students from different departments together," King said. "Art is universal, and can be used to engage conversation in all fields, and it is my hope that students from all departments will use the Anderson Gallery to expand their minds, explore new ideas, and experience what art has to offer." The Anderson Gallery has a wide range of programs scheduled for the fall, beginning with an installation by Yoji Matsumura of Tokyo, Japan. Matsumura will create art using objects from the Des Moines area, which he will gather during a month-long stay prior to the opening Friday, Sept. 8, at 5 p.m. His work will be displayed Sept. 8 to Oct. 13. Drake faculty and staff enjoy Tex-Mex treat
 "Would you find me an apron?" president David Maxwell asks as he prepares to serve corn on the cob at this year's All University Picnic. Admirers pet one of two equine members of the Des Moines Police Department that made cameo appearances at the picnic.The cool summer breeze was a popular subject of conversation among Drake faculty and staff at this year's All University Picnic.It was a Tex-Mex-themed event, with Sodexho dining services providing barbeque beef and chicken sandwiches, corn on the cob, baked beans, potato and pasta salad, cookies, lemonade and more. The Des Moines police department introduced picnickers to a pair of horses, and Drake offered a raffle for gift certificates donated by local organizations, tickets to sporting events and Drake merchandise. The event took place Thursday, July 3, in the Harmon Fine Arts Center Arcade.

Wanted: Nominations for Levitt Awards
Nominations are now being accepted for the Madelyn M. Levitt Distinguished Community Service Award and the Madelyn M. Levitt Employee Excellence Awards, which will be presented at the Faculty and Staff Convocation at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, in Sheslow Auditorium, Old Main."This is an excellent opportunity to recognize outstanding members of the Drake community," said Venessa Macro, director of Human Resources. "Please consider submitting a nomination. All nominees will receive a copy of the nomination submitted on their behalf." The Madelyn M. Levitt Distinguished Community Service Award is designated for a current faculty or staff member with at least five years of service at Drake. Criteria for the award include a demonstrated personal commitment to volunteerism and community service, an outstanding record of leadership or substantial involvement in community projects, services and activities contributing to the quality of life in our region, state and/or the nation, professional and personal values and behavior that typify the ideals of giving back to others and making a difference in the lives of others. The Madelyn M. Levitt Employee Excellence Award is presented to two current staff members with at least one year of service at Drake who demonstrate exceptional commitment to excellence in the performance of their duties. Criteria for the award include exceptional performance as an employee of Drake, consistently going above and beyond the regular expectations of the position, outstanding dedication to providing courteous, prompt and quality service, demonstrated commitment to university programs, initiatives and services, professional values and behavior that demonstrate exceptional service to others and a commitment to Drake University. To submit a nomination for one or both of these awards, please provide a letter of nomination to Venessa Macro in Human Resources by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8. One nomination letter detailing specific examples of how the nominee exemplifies each of the applicable criteria is desirable. Additional letters of support are not necessary. A screening committee will review all nominations and make recommendations to the President's Cabinet.
