March Message to Parents

As we reach the middle of the Spring semester, we wanted to take some time to focus on the importance of self-care and some of the resources offered here at Drake to assist your student during what can be a very stressful time.

Academic Success

Academic success is not solely determined by the hours your students are studying. It’s determined by students’ overall ability to understand themselves and how they function. The Academic Achievement office at Drake has a holistic approach toward developing students. We focus on academics, but we also focus on self-care, student involvement, and personal development.

If you believe your student can improve their time management skills, study skills, note-taking skills, or are facing other unique challenges. They can schedule an appointment with Bryan Thomas in the Academic Achievement Office. You can visit our website at http://www.drake.edu/acadassist/ or you can email Bryan at bryan.thomas@drake.edu. We have many resources at Drake to help make sure your student thrives so please encourage them to seek out the Academic Achievement office.

Recreation and Wellness

Did you know that health and wellness related issues are among the most common barriers to student success in higher education?  The Department of Recreational Services at Drake provides a variety of health and wellness related programs and services designed to help students improve their physical, spiritual, and social wellness. Rec Services is located in the Bell Center and is home to Intramurals, Sport Clubs, Wellness, and Aquatics.

Students who get adequate sleep, exercise regularly, practice healthy eating habits, cultivate healthy social habits, and engage in campus programs tend to graduate sooner, do better in school and have a higher quality of life.  Drake Wellness provides free programs and services that promote healthy habits and behavior change. Programs include Group Fitness classes, Bulldog Fun Run/Walk, Bulldog Bootcamp and Glow Hip Hop. Wellness services include Fitness Assessments, Body Compositions, Wellness Library, and Wellness Coaching. Additionally, we have massage therapy available at reduced rates for students.
