Politics & International Relations

The mission of the Department of Politics and International Relations is to provide a learning environment that produces liberally educated citizens who are fluent in the language of politics and political analysis and thereby have the foundation for both citizenship in a democratic society and successful training in a job, in a graduate school, or in a professional school.

Our degrees prepare students for graduate school in political science, international relations, and related fields.

Our degrees also prepare students for careers in government (at the local, state, national and international levels), political campaigns, law, political journalism, business, non-profit organizations, and academics. Our alumni have received graduate degrees from some of the most prominent graduate programs in the country, and we have graduates working in rewarding careers in politics and international affairs in Des Moines and other cities, in Iowa and other state governments, nationally, and across the globe.

Departmental faculty have received college and university-wide honors and recognition for teaching, mentoring, and scholarship. Faculty honors include outstanding teaching awards, an outstanding mentor award, Stalnaker Lecturers, Centennial Scholars, an award for campus engagement, and named professorships.

Both our majors in Politics and International Relations contribute to Drake University’s mission of preparing students for meaningful personal lives, professional accomplishments and responsible global citizenship.
