Jewett Residence

Option 1

Shelter Areas

• Interior half-basement hallway and stairwell on west side of the building
• Interior half-basement hallway on east side of the building

Comments

• An action plan should consist of dividing the large group into two areas that are physically separated.
• This option could be implemented immediately.

Option 2

Shelter Area

• Recreation Room in half-basement

Comments

• This area has more than enough capacity to shelter the anticipated occupancy.
• All residents could be sheltered in one place, making communication and management much easier.
• Exterior glass windows are partially above grade at the north and south ends of the rec room. This glass should be treated with an anti-shatter window film to decrease the risk of occupant injury from high velocity glass shards.

Morehouse Residence

Option 1

Shelter Areas

• Interior half-basement south hallway
• Laundry room off the south hallway

Comments

• An action plan would have to consist of dividing the large group into two areas that are physically separated.
• There are only couple interior glass windows that communicate to the hallways. This glass should be treated with an anti-shatter window film to decrease the risk of occupant injury from high velocity glass shards.

Option 2

Shelter Area

• Recreation Room in half-basement

Comments

• All residents could be sheltered in one place, making communication and management much easier.

• There are exterior glass windows partially above grade at the east end of the rec room. This glass should be treated with an anti-shatter window film to decrease the risk of occupant injury from high velocity glass shards. There is also one window on the west end of the rec room behind the vending machines that should be replaced with a solid material.

Cole Hall

Option 1

Shelter Area

• Cowles Library basement inner stack room

Comments

• There are windows and glass double doors at the north and south sides of the only potential shelter area. The risk to occupants evacuating to an adjacent building is perceived to be about the same as sheltering in the area exposed to large amounts of glass and debris.
• This building will not be occupied during the summer, reducing overall risk.
• When occupied, measures should be in place to give occupants priority notification of Tornado Watches and Warnings to expedite relocation.
• This option could be implemented immediately.

Option 2

Shelter Area

• Cole Hall ground floor lobby area

Comments

• There are windows and glass double doors at the north and south ends of the lobby shelter area. This glass should be treated with an anti-shatter window film to decrease the risk of occupant injury from high velocity glass shards.

Howard hall

Option 1

Shelter Area

• Interior half-basement hallways

Comments

• This area has more than enough capacity to shelter the anticipated occupancy.
• There are interior doors with wired glass that could pose some risk to occupants. However, this risk to occupants is perceived to be less than the risk of evacuating to another building.
• This option could be implemented immediately.

Option 2

Shelter Area

• Interior half-basement hallways

Comments

• This option would include the exterior windows being treated with an antishatter window film to decrease the risk of occupant injury from high velocity glass shards. This would help protect the wired glass near the shelter area.

Old Main / Sheslow

(Normal occupancy, no events at Levitt Hall or Sheslow Auditorium)

Shelter Area

• Basement area beneath the stage at Sheslow Auditorium

Comments

• The Auditorium would have to remain unlocked when the building is occupied as well as the door to the basement area. Security concerns would also mean the sound booth would have to be locked at all times.
• This option could be implemented immediately.

Old Main / Sheslow

(Event at Levitt Hall)

Shelter Areas

• Basement area beneath the stage at Sheslow Auditorium
• Center lobby area, restrooms and connecting hallway on ground floor between Old Main and Sheslow

Comments

• Basement area alone does not have the capacity to hold the anticipated occupancy for a Levitt Hall event.
• There are glass doors at the east and west ends of the lobby shelter area. This glass would have to be treated with an anti-shatter window film to decrease the risk of injury to occupants from high velocity glass shards.
• The window treatment would provide a risk reduction for those in the central lobby area.

Old Main / Sheslow

(Event at Sheslow Auditorium)

Shelter Areas

• Basement area beneath the stage at Sheslow Auditorium
• Center lobby area, restrooms and connecting hallway on ground floor between Old Main and Sheslow
• Old main ground floor hallway

Comments

• There are glass doors at the east and west ends of both shelter areas. This glass should be treated with an anti-shatter window film to decrease the risk of injury to occupants from high velocity glass shards.
• This is the only option that creates a similar degree of risk for the large number of people who would have to seek shelter.
