Iowa Character Awards

*Nominations due May 9, 2017*

The Ray Center annually recognizes Iowans who show the Six Pillars of CHARACTER COUNTS!: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and good citizenship.  Since 2005, we have recognized more than 100 Iowans for showing good character.

You can nominate any Iowan who shows good character.

Complete an online nomination form and tell us how the nominee shows good character. Get started on your nomination.  

The nomination consists of 2 essay questions:

  1. Tell us about the nominee (up to 250 words)
  2. Tell us how the nominee shows good character (up to 500 words)

You may also submit up to 3 pages of supplemental materials (i.e., letters of recommendation)

Category descriptions
  • Youth (ages 10-18)
  • Adult (19+)
  • Community (city, town, neighborhood or online community or a group of 3 or more individuals who share common attitudes, interest and goals)
  • Educator (teacher or school administrator)
  • School  (school building or district)
  • Athletic team or organization - Pursuing Victory with Honor (any athletic team or organization, including school teams and rec teams)
  • Student team or organization (scholastic teams, school clubs, and other student lead groups)
  • Business or Organization (nonprofit and for-profit businesses and organizations)

Award selection

A volunteer selection committee will review all nominations.  Award recipients will be announced in June, 2017.

Award presentation

Award recipients will receive their Iowa Character Award at an awards dinner on Friday, July 21, 2017 in Altoona, IA. The awards dinner will feature videos about each recipient (see videos about last year's recipients here). All nominees are invited to attend.
