Meet Our Staff

Lisa Murphy, Assistant Director of Recreational Services- Intramurals & Open Recreation

Before coming to Drake University in the Fall of 2004, Lisa travelled her way around the state of Iowa.  Lisa grew up in Perry, Iowa and then headed to the University of Northern Iowa to earn her B.A. in Leisure, Youth & Human Services.  After UNI Lisa head to Iowa City where she earned her M.A in Sports Management from the University of Iowa.  At Drake University you can see Lisa working with sports clubs, intramurals, memberships and recreation student employees.  She also enjoys playing a variety of Intramurals – but some of her favorite are basketball, football, softball and volleyball.  During her time away from Drake, she enjoys spending time with her husband, 2 sons, and is expecting her third child this summer.

Jordan Grindeland, Intramural and Club Sports Coordinator

Jordan graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a Bachelors of Business Administration-Management. He mainly grew up in Colorado, spending as much time in the mountains as possible. Last year, he was the NIRSA Colorado State Student Leader, in hopes to become a Regional Leader in the future. Jordan’s favorite hobbies are golfing, longboarding, snowboarding, and watching the Seattle Seahawks win on Sundays. Jordan will be pursuing a Masters of Public Administration degree for next two years.

 Intramural Supervisors

  Alyssa Mougin

‌‌‌ Alyssa is from Tiffin, Iowa, which you have probably passed on the interstate but never actually paid attention to. She made her way to Drake University to fulfill her dream of becoming an intramural ref and major in marketing. Alyssa enjoys watching One Tree Hill, stealing people's phone to snapchat on, and working out (even if officiating competitive men's basketball counts as her workout).

  Forrest Wrede

Forrest spent most of his childhood in the sprawling metropolis of Cedar Falls, Iowa. He ran cross country throughout high school and graduated as the reigning Intramural Quidditch champion. Forrest is a Marketing, Management and Information Systems triple major, and can frequently be seen scootering around campus on his red Razor. He is the vice president of the Drake Sports Business Network and a 13-time intramural captain. He enjoys sports of all kinds, reading and pictures of cats with poor grammar on the internet.

 Pamela Sanford

‌ Born and raised in the heart of St. Peters, Missouri, Pamela is the youngest of four making her active in a variety of activites: camping, hiking, competitive soccer and basketball, music, and of course fighting for the tv remote. She is currently studying Pharmacy at Drake University. Her biggest on campus fear is acorns as she almost broke her ankle once. When not attending supervisor meetings she enjoys jumping out of planes for a thrill.

  Matt Bentz

Matt was raised in small town hickville Iowa, he attends Drake with great ambitions, to become a Medical Doctor. Matt loves to be told how to make calls by the players during games, and he always thanks everyone who tells him how with a delightful technical foul, card, or unsportsman like conduct call. If you want to get to know him just ask he loves to talk, maybe a bit too much. He is the saving grace that helped bring the IM intramural soccer team in 2013 the gold (He is self-proclaimed as only 90% terrible). Anyone who disagrees with that, come at me BRO.

 Alex Smith

‌ Alex grew up in the small town of Springfield in SW rural Minnesota. He graduated from Springfield High School where he was a three-sport athlete in Football, Basketball, and Baseball where he helped his basketball team win the Minnesota Class 'A' State Championship in 2011. Alex is currently a Pharmacy major and a member of the grey-squad (the basketball practice team). He enjoys any athletic competition and he is an avid outdoorsman who spends much of his free time hunting and fishing when at home in Minnesota. Thankfully, he is better than Dick Cheney at shooting a gun.

  Trevor Carlson

Trevor was born and raised in Owatonna, MN where he played soccer, basketball, and ran track. He is a first-year Actuarial Science major. He is one of the few people left at Drake University that does not own a smartphone. He enjoys officiating because it allows him to show no expression for hours at a time. This is also the reason he enjoys playing Texas Hold’em. In his free time, he enjoys fishing, playing sports, and shooting pool.

 Micheal Wendlandt

Michael grew up in Iola, WI, the epitome of a small town, and graduated in 2009, competing in football, basketball, and (especially) baseball as much as he could, including school teams. He is currently studying Radio/TV Production while minoring in politics and history, and he aspires to be a sportscaster somewhere, maybe even at Drake. When not at the Bell Center, you can find Michael either playing sports somewhere, lifting weights, or watching one of his almost 700 movies.

Intramural Junior Supervisors

Layton Mikkalson

Layton is from South Eastern Minnesota (the greatest state there is) and enjoys pretty much every sport. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, and the outdoors in general, as well as long walks on the beach and slow romantic sunsets. When he is not officiating intramural games he spends his time working out, hanging out, doing Sig Ep stuff, and occasionally studying. He likes slow jazz and smoking his corn cob pipe, while reading leather-bound books on his rich mahogany desk. God Bless America.

 Serena Swanson

Serena was born and raised in Prior Lake, Minnesota where she grew up playing soccer, dancing competitively, hanging out on the lake and spending time with friends and family. She is a Sophomore International Business and Marketing double major and a self-proclaimed wonderful intramural referee when it comes to any sport besides basketball. You can find her on campus spending time eating at the lovely dining hall, Hubbell, doing Kappa things or throwing a frisbee/football in Helmick commons.
