Mike Cigelman is an avid fan of “birding” (which non-birders call bird watching). He holds degrees from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Nebraska-Omaha, and Drake University. His goal is to “provide a safe and welcoming environment for students, faculty, and staff to enjoy, and an outstanding venue for student-athletes to practice and compete.” He loves the opportunity of interacting with the Drake community that Recreational Services offers. Besides his wife Susan (and their two dogs, Kirby and Teddy) and “birding,” Mike’s interests include golf and muscle cars.
Associate Director of Rec. Services - Facilities
Matt Miller graduated from Drake University with a BS in Secondary Education, and then later with a MSE in Effective Teaching, Learning, & Leadership. He is in charge of the daily facility operations, including overseeing the fitness room, weight room, and other various areas of the facility. Matt also oversees the Event Staff and event operations. One of his favorite things about the Bell Center is the upgrades in the fitness room. Matt enjoys spending time with his wife Angie and their daughters, Delaney and Peyton.

Assistant Director of Rec. Services - Intramurals and Open Recreation
Lisa Murphy oversees a lot of the goings-on at the Bell Center: intramurals, open recreation, memberships, the website, Golf: For Business and Life, the faculty/staff golf league. She received her Bachelor’s in Leisure Youth and Human Services from University of Northern Iowa, and her Master’s in Recreation Management from the University of Iowa. When asked about her favorite thing at the Bell Center, she replied “the people.” Lisa says she gets to interact with interesting people every day. Some of her favorite things are playing sports and outdoor activities. She also enjoys “hanging out with [her] kid,” Braydon. Lisa’s husband is Ryan, they also have a dog, Wrigley.
Jana Peterson says her favorite thing about the Bell Center is the atmosphere – it’s a fun and exciting place! She said, “I feel good when I’m in the Bell Center.” She is the Director of Wellness here at Drake, where she helps students, faculty, and staff achieve their personal wellness goals. She holds degrees from both Iowa State and Drake. Her all time favorite activity here is group exercise (which she encourages everyone to attend). She and her husband Eric have two daughters, Paige (6) and Avery (3), and two dogs, Maci and Spencer.
Assistant Wellness Director
Johanna Determann graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Health Promotion. She earned a Master of Science from Drake University in Adult Learning and Organizational Performance. Johanna coordinates the group exercise program and works with individuals to establish personal wellness goals. Johanna is an American Council on Exercise certified Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor and a NETA certified Pilates instructor. Outside of working at Drake she enjoys going to concerts, reading, gardening, and running.
Matt Gasser is originally from the “great state of Colorado” (his words). He graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a degree in Sociology. He currently organizes all Drake’s intramurals, including scheduling the games and training the officials. His favorite thing about the Bell Center is all the employees – professional staff and students. In his free time, he enjoys playing sports or doing anything competitive.
