Godfried Asante earned his BA in Communication, Media and Rhetoric from the University of Minnesota, Morris and his MA in Communication Studies from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Godfried has a Ph.D. in Intercultural Communication from the University of New Mexico. His research interests focus on social identities such as race, class, gender, and sexuality in transnational contexts. The primary goal of his research is to use communication to explore how social inequalities and human rights violations are enacted and reproduced. Specifically, how social actors are positioned in systems of power relations to create subjugated subject positons. Godfried’s approach into these research areas is to examine the relationship between language use and social disparities. He has published essays in journals including Howard Journal of Communications, Communication Theory, and the Journal of International and Intercultural Communication. He is an active member of the Western Communication Association and the National Communication Association and has presented numerous essays at regional, national and international conferences. Godfried’s research is driven by a deep concern for social justice.

As a new faculty member at Drake University, Godfried hopes to bring global perspectives to the classroom, help students understand the dynamic interplay of local and global processes. In doing this, service learning and community engagement projects will be central to his classes at Drake University.
