Staying on or around campus during Fall Break? Looking for a way to volunteer for the Des Moines community? Want to work for social justice with other like-minded individuals? Drake’s first ever Alternative Fall Break program will allow you to do all of these things and more! Come to the information meeting for Alternative Fall Break-Through: A Plunge into Des Moines on September 7th from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Drake Room in Olmsted.
On both Saturday and Monday, the program will partner with Greater Des Habitat for Humanity by volunteering with their Rock the Block program, which “assist[s] low income residents with needed repair, maintenance, weatherization, safety, accessibility and beautification of homes.” Friday, Sunday, and Tuesday will be filled with various activities and exercises that will expose you to different cultures, places, values, and people of Des Moines.
Service-learning, social justice, and exploration of the Des Moines community will be the focus of this exciting five day program. Throughout the course of the event, issues relating to social justice will be emphasized through readings, discussion, and reflection. Costs are minimal—only $20—and multiple meals, academic materials, transportation, and a T-shirt will be provided! Don’t let money stop you from applying; scholarships are available. Learn how YOU can be a part of making a difference in the Drake and Des Moines communities! Apply now!
