SLA Program

Service-Learning Ambassadors (SLAs) are students committed to working with service-learning and community engagement. Currently, we have 6 SLAs in our office. Each SLA works with a community partner on a specific project in which Drake students can be involved. This year, we are partnering with SPROUT, Evelyn K. Davis Center, Everybody Wins! Iowa and Boys and Girls Club of Central Iowa. We also hire a graphic design and marketing student to work with the programmatic SLAs and professional staff in the office. In the past, we have also partnered with Dress for Success Des Moines. SLAs commit to working 6-9 hours a week on their project, working to plan and organize the event/project, recruit Drake students, and perform follow-up. SLAs are project-based positions that are paid through the Provost’s Office and the Service-Learning and Community Engagement budget. Community partners do not pay for SLAs.

The SLA program started in the 2012-2013 school year with six SLAs.

  • Kelcy – Everybody Wins! Iowa
  • Ann – Alternative Fall Break/STEP
  • Madi – SPROUT/Boys and Girls Club
  • Emily – SPROUT/Boys and Girls Club
  • Shayla – ICAP/Evelyn K. Davis

If you are interested in the SLA program applications are available in the spring. Students are invited to email servicelearning@drake.edu for more information.
