Gifted and Talented Endorsement (Online)

Courses for the Gifted and Talented Endorsement Strand will comply with the 12 hour Iowa Department of Education requirements for preparation of teachers, consultants, coordinators in gifted education programs. The required 12 hours in four areas (psychology, programming, administration, and practicum) can include 12 of the 14 hours from Drake and/or transfer and elective hours for the masters degree (MSE) program. See your advisor for transcript review.

Required Courses:

Students must have coursework from each of these areas and a total of 12 hours for this endorsement. All courses are offered in online format.

Faculty:

Marian Houseman has thirty-three years of experience in education, including work as a K-12 Director of Curriculum K-12 TAG teacher, K-6 Assistant Principal, Remedial Reading teacher and classroom teacher for third grade, forth grade, fifth grade and eighth grade Social Studies. She has been trained in the Autonomous Learner Model for gifted education and has attended workshops given by Renzulli, Reis, Treffinger, Betts, Tomlinson, Rogers and Winebrenner. She was also a Belin Fellowship Program participant for both elementary and secondary education. Marion is the instructor for EDUC 291 Introduction to Gifted Education and EDUC 210 Practicum in Gifted Education.

Chris Schultz is a Talented and Gifted Strategist at Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa. During 33 years in gifted related education, Chris has received many awards, including: ITAG Research Award, Belin Teacher Honoree, Iowa Space Grant Consortium, and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Math Teaching. Chris is the instructor for EDUC 296 Differentiated Instruction for Gifted Learners and EDUC 298 Gifted Learners: Math Strategies.

Arlene DeVries served 25 years as a Des Moines Schools Community Resource Consultant and is currently a private Gifted and Talented consultant. She is a national board member of both SENG and NAGC and a past president of ITAG. She has attended and presented at more than 80 Gifted and Talented conferences. Arlene is the instructor for EDUC 292 Social Emotional Needs of the Gifted.

Sally Beisser is currently an Associate Professor at Drake University. She taught gifted students in Ames Community Schools and West Des Moines Community Schools for 13 years. She has been honored with the ITAG Research Award, AERA Research Award, the NAGC Doctoral Student Award, and the ITAG Distinguished Service Award. Sally is the instructor for EDUC 293 Creativity.

Kathy Paul is the TAG coordinator for Johnston Community Schools. She received a certificate for Professional Achievement from NAGC and has instructed many classes in gifted education across Iowa. Kathy is the instructor for EDUC 295 Curriculum & Assessment of Giftedness and EDUC 290 Administration of Gifted Programs

Annie Orsini is a second grade teacher for West Des Moines Schools. Annie is the co-instructor for EDUC 297 Gifted Readers: Literacy Strategies.

Chris Bergman is a fifth grade teacher for West Des Moines Schools. Chris is the co-instructor for EDUC 297 Gifted Readers: Literacy Strategies.
