Iowa Virtual Literacy Initiative (IVLI)
Struggling readers experience multiple barriers to achieving education and employment goals. For adults with low literacy skills, reading and writing is the barrier to earning a GED, to post-secondary education and to good-paying jobs.
Print disabilities can be a learning disability, visual impairment or physical disability. Although these conditions are very different, they all share one characteristic: print cannot be accessed in the standard way.
Virtual Literacy Defined
With emerging technologies, individuals with low literacy skills can now have immediate access to information and knowledge. Text-to-speech and speech-to-text give adult learners the opportunity to build knowledge and skills prior to their ability to gain literacy competence in the traditional sense.
