Drake University’s website is the principal means of communicating with all audiences: prospective students and their influencers, current students and parents, faculty and staff, alumni, employers of Drake students and graduates, and members of the Greater Des Moines community. The website is the flagship of the Drake University brand and has been designed and written to convey Drake’s core attributes:
The website’s primary role is to serve as a recruiting tool and, more broadly, as an introduction to the University for all outside audiences and first-time visitors. As such, its structure reflects how outside and first-time visitors to the Drake site look for information. To accommodate internal and regular external users of the site—including current students, faculty and staff, and alumni—the site includes audience-specific gateways that offer shortcuts to the information and resources these users access most frequently.
Because Drake's website is the University’s primary communication tool, we must maintain it vigilantly. Content editors should check their pages regularly, especially any content containing tuition or financial aid numbers, degree requirements, dates and deadlines, course descriptions, or faculty and staff contact information. The Drake University web presence comprises three levels of pages:
University-level pages include the Drake University homepage; upper-level pages within the About, Academics, Admission, and Campus Life sections, University-wide News and Events; and Homepage feature elements. The Office of University Communications maintains these top-level pages.
Maintenance of school and department level pages—including both academic and administrative departments—are the responsibility of the individual departments. Department heads are responsible for establishing a content review schedule for their sites and assigning a sufficient number of staff members to conduct the review. Web maintenance should be formally included in the job descriptions of relevant staff members, and they should be given the time, training, and support to properly execute those responsibilities. The Office of University Communications will provide content management consultation and strategy support as requested by college, school, and administrative offices. UC has partnered with Information Technology Services (ITS) to provide new user training and periodic refresher training upon request. Individual schools and departments bear sole responsibility for maintaining their pages.
Personal pages include websites maintained by individual students and faculty members outside the structure of the main University site. These sites may be specific to research projects, clubs, or organizations, or may simply be personal websites or blogs. While it is permissible to link to these sites from the the main Drake site, they cannot be hosted on University servers, nor can the Office of University Communications offer assistance in maintaining them. Note: any information or documents specific to the academic or administrative business of the University—syllabi, reading lists, class notes, etc.—must be posted and maintained on the official Drake website and not on personal web pages.
To ensure visual consistency across all browsers and operating systems, Drake University’s website uses the RGB equivalents of the color palette.
Drake Bright Blue
Color equivalents to Pantone were made through color chip evaluation and selected monitor displays. Standard Adobe software conversions should not be used.
The University will be transitioning to TypeKit web fonts for future website development, these font will match the current branding guide; Harfang Light and Proxima Nova.
Please use the alternative web safe fonts with TypeKit is not an option. These fonts are Book Antiqua and Helvetica. These fonts are available across web browsers and additionally safe for email use.
