Scheduled Programs
  • S.H.A.P.E. Program – Supporting Healthy Activity & Promoting Exercise –This program will help you monitor and log your activity.  S.H.A.P.E. allows you to receive rewards for all levels of activity including cardiovascular exercise, sporting activities, wellness programs, and even household activities.  Contact the Wellness Center for more information.
  • Annual Health Fair - Explore your health and well being at the annual health fair.  Various information and screenings will be available.  Some of the screening that you can take part in include: body composition, weight, blood pressure, resting heart rate and more!  The Health Fair will take place in the Pomerantz Stage area of the Olmsted Center. Date: October 23 from 10:30 am - 1:30 pm
  • Passport: Roundtrip to Health – During each of passports 6 weeks you can tour 7 different countries.  To complete a country visit, you will participate in physical activity and meet a nutritional goal.  You do not need to be a competitive athlete or a nutrition expert to benefit from passport.  Whether you are thinking of becoming more active and eating healthier, or already practicing these good habits, you are the perfect passenger for this trip.  The trip embarks October 29 with a return date of December 7.  For more information contact Johanna Determann.
  • Resolution Solution - Have you made your New Year's Resolution?  Stick to it this year with the help of Resolution Solution.  This incentive program is designed to motivate and help you fulfill that resolution to get moving and/or lose weight.  Last year 288.4 pounds were lost during the competition and 93% of the people participating improved or maintained the body composition!!!  Resolution Solution  is a 12-week competition that will encourage participants to develop or maintain healthy activity and eating habits with the ultimate goal of reaching or maintaining a healthy weight.  Drake employees are challenged to form teams of five people and then get moving!  Teams will be awarded points for completing activity and nutrition challenges as well as for healthy weight loss or maintenance of healthy weight.  The teams with the most points at the end of competition will split the "pot".  (The cost is $5/person, that money will go into a "pot" for the 1st and 2nd place teams to split.)
  • Cholesterol Management - This program provides insight to successful cholesterol management. It will give you the opportunity to ask questions and create a plan to meet your healthy lifestyle goals during individualized, confidential meetings with a member of the Drake Wellness Team. 
  • 10,000 Steps Punch Card - Already taking 10,000 steps each day?  Not ready to make the 6-week commitment?  This program is for you!  For each day that you take at least 10,000 steps, you will check off one star on your 14-star punch card.  When the card is complete, send it or drop it off at the Wellness Center for a chance to win a prize.  This program option is individual and will be done on your own time.  For more information, contact Johanna Determann.
  • Weight Training Clinics - Interested in weight training, but don't know where to start? Then this one-on-one clinic is just for you! Clinics provide participants with basic weight training guidelines. The beginning clinic will focus on the weight machines while the advanced clinic introduces the participant to free weight exercises. Just give the Wellness Center a call to schedule your own personal Weight Training Clinic!
  • Weight Watchers @ Drake - The meetings consist of a private weigh-in followed by a group meeting where the essentials of healthy weight loss, good nutrition and behavior modification are explained. For information on fees, location, etc. contact Johanna Determann.

  • Health Screening - Receive a reduced rate on your monthly Drake insurance premiums by participating in the screening. The screening includes a health risk appraisal, blood lipid profile, blood pressure reading, body fat measurement, and a wellness consultation. For more information contact Jana Peterson.
  • Massage Therapy - Enjoy the relaxation and stress relief that massage therapy can offer. Thirty-minute or one hour full-body massages appointments are available two Fridays a month.  For more information or to sign up for an appointment contact Jana Peterson.
  • Wellness Library - Drake Wellness now has a variety of wellness-related books, relaxation audiotapes and videos available for you to check out. Stop by the Wellness Center to borrow a book on stress management, healthy relationships, weight loss, running, healthy eating cookbooks, moving through menopause, and general fitness. The Wellness Center will also deliver!

GROUP EXERCISE PROGRAMS- ALL FREE!!!

  • Fitness Yoga - The practice of yoga can develop flexibility, strength, stamina, concentration, and balance, while promoting deep relaxation.
  • Pilates - Pilates is a method of physical and mental conditioning. Total body exercises are performed to increase flexibility, strength, balance, posture and stamina. Building strength in the "power house" (abdomen, low back and buttocks) is the focus. Pilates concentrates on fewer repetitions and precise movements, requiring proper form.
  • Tai Chi/Chi Kung Classes - Performed slowly, Tai Chi consists of physical postures and movements requiring mind-body coordination and often is described as "meditation in motion".  Over time, this practice will strengthen your muscles, increase your energy, improve your balance, increase your flexibility, enhance your concentration and calm your mind.
  • Group Exercise Classes - Experience all the benefits of a great cardiovascular workout with fun music in a group setting. These FREE classes are taught so all fitness levels will feel welcome. Contact the Wellness Center for a schedule of classes including circuit, step, kickboxing, toning and water aerobics.  

SEASONAL EVENTS

  • Health Fair - The all-university health fair will take place each fall semester. 
  • Take Care Packages - Show your appreciation to your colleagues this holiday season by sending a healthy "Take Care" package provided by the Recreational Services Staff. Packages will include fruit, trail mix, and other healthy treats. They may be purchased from the Drake Wellness Center for $5.00 each.
