Scheduled Programs

S.H.A.P.E. Program – Supporting Healthy Activity & Promoting Exercise –This program will help you monitor and log your activity.  S.H.A.P.E. allows you to receive rewards for all levels of activity including cardiovascular exercise, sporting activities, wellness programs, and even household activities. Start logging your minutes today!  If you have any questions please contact the Wellness Center.

Wellness Seminars - Each semester Drake offers wellness seminars covering a variety of topics. Come to one or both seminars.  During each seminar you will have the opportunity to hear Drake Wellness staff or local experts present on various wellness related topics.  Please RSVP for the event at wellness@drake.edu. The Fall 2014 Seminars are as follows:

        Veggie Tales: Wednesday, October 1 2:00 - 3:00 pm Location TBD

  • With the recent shift from summer to fall, you might be wondering what produce is best at the market and grocer this time of year.  We all know that eating vegetables is important but sometimes those baby carrots and spinach salads get boring, right? If you're looking to incorporate more vegetables into your meals and snacks, this seminar is for you!  Samples will be available for you to try!


Reclaim Your Holidays: Tuesday, November 18 10:00 - 11:30 am  Location TBD 

  • Do you find you are getting stressed about the holidays and they aren't even here yet? Are you caught up in the shopping, wrapping, decorating, parties and lack of time that the holiday season presents?  If so, it is time to Reclaim your Holidays!  Come to this seminar to learn how to make your holidays more meaningful and memorable and focus on what really matters most - to YOU! This seminar will include self-reflection and will be thought provoking.  You have the power to make your holidays a time of year worth remembering.

     

Monthly Motivator - Stay on track with your wellness initiatives with this new program taht focuses on a topic a month.  Sign up for 1 month or all 4.  After the month is over, you will turn in your completed materials for a prize.  Everyone that participates will receive an inforamtion sheet along with a tracking sheet to record your monthly challenge.  Please contact Jana Peterson for more details or to sign up.  Great prizes can be earned for those that complete the challenge!

The Next Step Challenge - This program is part of the Live Healthy Iowa Program.  The Next Step Challenge is a team challenge and you will track your number of steps taken each day online.  You will be competing against other Iowans in teams of 2 - 10 people.  The program runs from September 8 - October 17 and costs $10.  To regsiter visit the Live Healthy Iowa website, click on JOIN TODAY and enter the assigned ID: LHIDRAKE in the Corporate/Group ID box.  Complete all the required fields and submit.  If you have any questions please contact Jana Peterson.

This is How We Roll - Foam rolling is a technique of self-myofascial release (SMR) to help relax muscles.  Muscles develop tightness and knots due to prolonged sitting, exercise and general tension and stress build-up.  During this workshop you will learn how to use a foam roller to reduce aches and pains, increase mobility and flexibility, and increase recovery of muscles.  This workshop will be hands on and you will try some of the exercises.  We strongly advise you to wear comfortable clothing to this workshop.  To register email: wellness@drake.edu.

Healthiest State Walk - Over the past four years, hundreds of thousands of Iowans have taken great steps toward building a healthier Iowa by participating in the annual Healthiest State Walks.  Thanks to enthusiastic participation across the state, we've climbed from the 19th healthiest state to the top 10 in just three years!  State leaders, along with Drake Wellness, are once again calling upon Iowans to walk in October in support of the Healthiest State Initiative. Participate in the fourth annual Healthiest State Walk on October 8!  Commit to walking 1k (about 12 minutes) with colleagues and students at the Drake University walk.  The walk will start at 12:15 at the East entrance to the Olmsted Center.  If you can't join us at that time - do something active that day and let us know about it!  The first 100 people in attendance will receive a goodie bag including a t-shirt. Register to be part of team today!

 Walk Through History - Do you love walking and want to learn more about our beautiful campus?  Do you already know a lot about our campus but need an excuse to cut loose from your desk for 90 minutes?  Are you interested in meeting new people on campus?  Do you have a competitive streak you can't wait to unleash? Surely you answered yes to at least one of those questions! If so, please join Drake Wellness for a fun, geo-caching style walk on Tuesday, October 13 from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm.  This walk will be done in teams of at least three and no more than five individuals.  You may assemble your own team or if you'd prefer, we can place you on a team.  Explore the great outdoors and this wonderful place we work all while getting several thousand steps in!  For more information or to register, email wellness@drake.edu.

It's A Wonderful Life - Why wait until January 1st to start working on your personal well-being when the time to get started is now!  If you can establish healthy habits between November 2 and December 12, you'll be on your way to a healthier 2015 in no time.  This six-week program encompasses multiple dimensions of wellness, includes fun, hands-on activities, and there will be an opportunity to earn some pretty awesome prizes if we must say so ourselves!  For more information or to sign-up, please email johanna.deteramann@drake.edu.

Faculty and Staff have access to online programming throughout the year using the Wellness portal,ManageWell.  These programs are part of the Mayo Clinic online program and can help you stay on track to be stress free, manage weight, stop smoking and to have a healthy pregnancy.  Sign up and start a program today! To get started visit ManageWell and select the program that will help you reach your wellness goals.  From ManageWell you will be directed to the MayoClinic website.

  • Health Screening - Receive a reduced rate on your monthly Drake insurance premiums by participating in the screening. The screening includes a health risk appraisal, blood lipid profile, blood pressure reading, body fat measurement, and a wellness consultation. For more information contact Jana Peterson.
  • Massage Therapy - Drake Wellness is offering massage therapy as a program that faculty, staff and students can participate in.  Massage therapy positively influences the overall health and well-being of clients. Massages take place in 113 Bell Center (Wellness Center).  We have two therapists, Anne and Heather. Their contact information and availability is below.   • Move More - Attend 15 group exercise classes during the fall 2014 semester and you will earn an aweome shirt.
  • Individualized Consultation - Individual consultations are available in the following areas: Fitness Testing, Exercise Prescription and Nutritional Analysis.  Email the wellness staff Jana Peterson or Johanna Determann to set up your appointment today.  Fitness testing inlcudes: weight, body composition, blood pressure, resting heart rate, sit ups and push ups. 
  • Wellness Library - Drake Wellness now has a variety of wellness-related books, relaxation audiotapes and videos available for you to check out. Stop by the Wellness Center to borrow a book on stress management, healthy relationships, weight loss, running, healthy eating cookbooks, moving through menopause, and general fitness. The Wellness Center will also deliver!
