Program Overview

On-Campus Program

The Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree program uses an integrative approach that emphasizes real-world application of knowledge and problem-solving strategies and techniques. Sustainability and organizational decision making are incorporated into and across courses. Students customize this program by selecting an area of specialization to develop skills best suited to their academic and career goals. The M.B.A. is backed by Drake University’s full resources and reputation.

Online Program

Led by expert faculty who are recognized scholars and experienced practitioners, Drake’s online MBA curriculum focuses on a balance of strategic decision-making, ethical leadership, and analytical reasoning that can be brought into any workplace immediately. The 39-credit hour program can be completed in two years, attending part-time. Drake’s online business master’s program is designed to prepare effective communicators, ethical stewards of organizations, data-driven problem solvers, and global citizens. In addition to providing a broad foundation in advanced business principles, the online MBA program allows students to customize their degree based on personal interests and career aspirations.

Other requirements

  • BUS 205 - Leadership Essentials
    • All CBPA graduate students are required to take this workshop designed to enhance and improve the key competencies of an effective presentation in a professional setting.
    • Students complete this workshop in their first semester.
  • Any limitations and special policies (eg., G.P.A. requirement or requirements that students take certain courses at Drake):
    • G.P.A.: Maintain a 3.0 or higher.
    • Courses must be completed with a “C” or better; no more than two “C” grades may be received; the cumulative grade point must be a 3.0 or better.
    • 12 hours of graduate work may be transferred in from an accredited university.
    • Transfer courses must be advisor-approved.
    • Courses transferred in are transferred as TR (no grade) and do not affect the Drake G.P.A.
    • Transferred coursework must be at a B- level or better.
    • Transfer credits earned before admission are counted on the following scale:
      • Courses taken 0-5 years before degree completion may be transferred in as full credit.
      • Courses taken 6-10 years before degree completion may be transferred in as ½ credit.
      • Courses over 10 years old are not accepted.
      • Courses that are accepted must relate to the program of study.

Notes:

  • Students may complete the M.B.A. program on either a part-time or full-time basis. Courses, however, are offered only in evening and weekend formats. There are no graduate-level daytime courses.
  • Students must be admitted to the M.B.A. program to enroll in graduate courses

Admission to On-Campus Program

Master of Business Administration applicants must meet the following admission requirements.

  • Graduate Admission Application: Applications may be completed online.
  • Application Fee of $50. Applicants who have previously paid the fee are not required to do so again.
  • Official transcripts for ALL undergraduate and graduate coursework from EVERY institution attended (even if a degree was not earned).
  • Current professional resume.
  • Personal essay: A personal essay no longer than one page should explain the candidate’s reason(s) for pursuing the M.B.A. degree. Examples of leadership background and experience should be included.
  • Submission of two letters of recommendation.
  • Grade Point Average Criteria: Successful candidates for admission typically have the following minimum graduate point average. Students who do not meet these G.P.A. minimums may contact the Graduate Programs Office of the College of Business and Public Administration for additional information.
    • Undergraduate GPA = 3.00 (upper division and cumulative), and
    • Graduate GPA = 3.00 (cumulative)
  • Test requirement: Applicants must submit official GMAT or GRE results. Successful candidates for admission typically have a minimum score of 500. For GMAT testing information, go to: http://www.mba.com. GRE scores: Quantitative=152, Verbal=152. For GRE testing information, go to www.ets.org/gre.  Details on the entrance exam waiver can be found at www.drake.edu/mba/application.
  • TOEFL exam: International candidates must submit TOEFL results. Minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 213 on the computer-based examination, 550 on the paper-based examination, or 79-80 on the internet-based test.
  • Application deadlines: To be eligible for consideration, applications must be received by the following deadlines.
    • Fall admission - July 15
    • Spring admission - December 1
    • Summer admission - April 1

Admission to Online Program

To apply for admission to Drake’s fully online Master of Business Administration program:

  • Complete the online application.
  • Submit your official transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities. Official transcripts are prepared and sent by the institution in question and received by Drake University in a sealed envelope. Transcripts mailed directly to the student must remain in the sealed envelope to be considered.

  • Submit an electronic copy of your résumé or curriculum vitae.
  • Submit a typed, one-page essay detailing how a graduate education at Drake University will help you reach your academic and professional goals.
  • Submit contact information for two professional recommendations.
  • Submit an official entrance exam score from one of the following exams:

Entrance Exam Waiver

The entrance exam is automatically waived if you meet one of the three conditions below.

  • You are a Drake University CBPA undergraduate alumnus from within the last five years and have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher.
  • You are a Drake University CBPA current undergraduate student with cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher and have completed 90 semester credits.
  • You hold a master’s or terminal degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher from a U.S. regionally accredited institution.

The entrance exam waiver will also be automatically waived if you meet all of the conditions below.

  • You have five years of progressive post-graduate work experience.
  • You have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher from a U.S. regionally accredited institution.
  • You have least 9 semester credits of undergraduate quantitative coursework.
    • Quantitative coursework may include courses in math, statistics, economics or other quantitative oriented courses.

Pre-MBA students do not need to submit GMAT or GRE scores if you meet all of the conditions below.

  • You have five years of progressive post-graduate work experience.
  • You have a minimum 3.0 GPA in two Pre-Admission courses, including a B or better in MBA 245: Leading with Data.
    • Grades of C+ (2.30) or below are not eligible for the entrance exam waiver.

International Students
If a student earned her/his undergraduate degree outside of the United States, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required. Scores dated within the last two years are acceptable and must be reported directly from the testing agency. Minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 213 on the computer-based exam, 550 on the paper-based exam, or 79-80 on the Internet-based exam. Minimum acceptable IELTS score is 6.5. Minimum scores on each section of reading, writing, speaking, and listening may be required.

Transfer Credits
Students may transfer up to nine credit hours from another AACSB accredited graduate program. All transfer credits must be earned with a grade of B- or higher, must directly relate to the program of study, and must fall within the five-year time frame for program completion. Transfer credits will be applied to the degree program upon successful completion of at least one term of enrollment in the program.

Non-Degree Admission
The Pre-MBA program is for students looking to take classes for personal enrichment or to qualify for an entrance exam waiver into Drake’s Master of Business Administration degree program.

Students interested in applying for the Pre-MBA must submit the following:

  • Complete the Graduate Pre-Admission Application.
  • Submit electronic copy of your résumé.
  • Submit unofficial transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities.

Pre-MBA students are allowed to complete the following MBA core courses:

  • MBA 240: Corporate Governance and Ethics
  • MBA 245: Leading with Data
  • MBA 242: Financial Reporting and Analysis (MBA 240 and MBA 245 are recommended prerequisites)

Once admitted into Drake’s Master of Business Administration program, all successfully completed Pre-MBA courses will transfer.
